According to local weatherman, it looks like a banner year for color! IIRC, there are some live camera feeds in the Smokies. You might want to Google this. I think there was one at Look Rock on the foothills Parkway. Probably are more.

I only take the backroads. I avoid Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville at all costs. I live about 45 mins away from Cades Cove. Went there a couple weeks ago and saw six different bears in various places. Didn't get any pics though, rangers were keeping you moving.

Just got back from a week there. The colors were changing litterly while I was there. You should be be ok, maybe not in the very peak but still alot of color. Unforunatly I wasted the first few days with a front focusing lens before I realized it. Note the pic below just isnt as sharp as it should be.
