You guys that print big. How big ? and if that were the case would'nt medium format be the proper option??

Of course there are some of you that print really big, but I think you are in the minority. Fashion photographers or pros shooting for advertisements typically don't shoot with a 5D - they'd be better served with a 1D body or even medium format digital.

Having said that, I admire you guys and girls who print poster-sized prints and hang them on your walls - good for you.

I received my 5D2 yesterday - which is replacing my D60 - and noticed that the small JPEG file is about the size of the RAW file output of of the D60. It's amazing how far we have come. I remember when a 1GHz Pentium III was thought to be ridiculous or when a 1GB solid state CF card cost $1,000. Technology grows in leaps and bounds. Eventually we'll all be running computers that can reasonably manage and store the output files of the new sensors...no reason to stunt the growth of one field because of the limitations of another. The problem, as has been stated. is the cost of what is now a relatively useless technological advance. The 5D2, as it is, was at the limit -or beyond- my budget...if the price of the product continues to climb they will price more and more people out of those cameras for the benefit of deferred obsolescence.

But isn't it nice that some amateurs and professionals now have an option that doesn't force them to take out a 2nd mortgage?

I find it interesting what cameras were used for THIS (external link) amazing project (Canon 1Ds3). Of course the software that was available to use in conjunction with these cameras made it all possible...but still, no medium format cameras used.

Autofocus! Dynamic range! Sync speed! THINGS THAT MATTER MORE THAN WHAT THE NUMBER OF MEGAPIXELS WILL BE!!!

lol. I need a cigarette.

Seriously though, I understand that a dozen people in the world shoot photographs that wind up on billboards in Times Square. They're probably shooting Hasselblad H4Ds, but whatever. Artists will make do with the tools available, just like they have always done. 10MP was enough, now 21MP is enough, and soon 50MP will be enough. My point isn't that it should or shouldn't have any specific resolution, but at this point in the discussion what that number is isn't even in the top 5 most important lines of the spec sheet.

The D700 vs. 5D2 is a better camera in every way that isn't maximum resolution and video capability. If Canon developers were to take their cues from this thread I'm pretty sure Canon's next generation advantage would just be maximum resolution.

A dozen people huh? right  Everyone here is intelligent enough to know that the other features you point out are extremely important. The discussion was just focused on camera resolution, that does't mean it trumps anything else. Pretty sure canon has improved DR with every successor, the 1D3 should be no different.

As far as AF, my guess is the 5D3 will have something very close to the 7D, there will certainly be improvement over the 5D2 if Canon is listening it's customers at all ;)

If I were you I'd be hoping for AF closer to the D700.

The OP was brilliant in their naming of this thread. They gave no specific month or even year!

This can be the eternal optimist thread for the 5D3! Yeeah.

The number is certainly closer to 12 than to the number of 5D Mark II bodies that have been sold.

That's my point.

Everyone is acting like a camera with at least 35 megapixels is a mandatory upgrade because we all are internationally successful fashion photographers or something. And furthermore, my point was that the photos in that one specific example were most likely not taken with a 5D Mark II anyway (although certainly, some have been). It's like saying that Honda must have a 600 horsepower V12 engine in their next Accord because some people race at La Mans. The people racing at La Mans aren't driving Hondas, and photographers doing the largest format fashion and advertising work in the world aren't using 5D model cameras.

It's just funny to see a community that frequently laments the public's misconceptions about the importance of megapixels whipped into a lather over them like this.

But I don't mean to be contrary to anyone's opinion, as we are all entitled to our own.

You seem to be of the opinion there is exclusion here. You can have higher pixel cound and more dynamic range.

And autofocus, synch speed? nothing to do with the sensor...

As for printing large I regulaly print A1 (33x22) and large panoramics (1.2-2m wide).

5D2 gets you to about 18inches wide at 300 dpi (I use a 7D so a little less).

MF would be better but some of us dont have our own gold mine...

Maybe in terms of direct resolution, but you can stretch it a hell of a lot farther than that before you start losing quality...

Not true...If you'd have watched America's/Australia's & New Zealand's Next Top Model Cycles for the past couple years which feature working Fashion Photogs it clearly shows that the majority shoot w/ the 5D MKii. And shooting Fashion myself I shoot w/ the 5D MKii and the client is always more than happy w/ the end result.
Cheers!
