Should I bring up the exposure to bring his face in more and sacrifice blowing out the rest of the image, is the slight under exposure distracting or does it give you more ambiance?

He's in the shade and you expect that to cool down the tone. You can make it warmer in PP, or brighten it, etc. It all depends on what YOU want it to look like since it's all under your control with software. Canon 7D | EF 24-105L | EF 70-300 | EF 400 5.6L
