Don't do it unless you are extremely prepared. Did it with my 5D, eventually put it back together and works as before, but lots and lots of time and effort.

Why did you need to open up your 5d?

I am capable of dismantling and reassembling a camera body, but I won't do it unless I had the factory procedure for doing so or another camera to photograph the takedown sequence.

I've been inside enough such devices to know things can get bad real fast if one is not extremely careful.

Knowing and having the proper tools helps as well.

No, and I am not planning to rebuild the engine in my van either.

Leave the surgery to the surgeons (unless you are a camera technician).

I work with computers (programming & lots of Excel spreadsheet work), but I don't want to touch the motherboard.
Leave that to the A+ guys.

Trying to access the stripped AF adjustment (prism positioning) hex screw from the inside was the reason I took mine apart. I was able to access it, but I still couldn't do anything with it because it is stripped.

A single allen wrench adjustment to an exposed and visible hex screw is slightly less complicated than surgery. Complete disassembly of a camera..may not be.

I think it depends on your technical aptitude.

DSLR cameras are not very hard to take apart and make it working again!

Old manual SLR cameras are more complex, for example a Canon A-1 I repaired about 8 years ago:

IMAGE: http://home.arcor.de/keinath/Bilder/Reparatur/Canon%20A1/Oben%20offen2.jpg

to get the body top cap away, I have taken ~ 36 parts away. Some of them were screws, some springs, small ball, distance rings that need the right direction afterwards...

On my EOS 350D / Rebel XT camera I took the IR cut filter away, and "invented" a system to make it possible to change filters (for example the origina, or different IR-transmission filters, or a ND filter) - see my homepage.

My EOS 1000D / Rebel XS I took several times apart, made one working out of two defective ones. And I had to repair the SD card slot:

That was no fun because I need to get in very deep, but the work involved is more or less simple.

But on the cameras with build it flash, the capacitor with its high voltage is a problem.

Sure if I need to. But then again I'm the kind of guy that also rebuilds his own car engines, fixes his own guitars and tube amps, and builds his own computers.

it's not that hard. you probably won't fix the problem as electronics are sensitive and not something that you can just re adjust to your liking.
