The best camera is the one you've got (but it's nice to have bells and whistles to play with)

The best pictures are the ones you pre-plan and are pretty much 'right' straight out of the camera (until they're not).

The one cliche that holds the best though is that it's the photog who really makes the difference. I've seen some awesome shots in here with 'cheap' bodies and nifty-fifties. I've read a number of articles in Outdoor Photography where Dewitt Jones goes on about his small cameras. I have seen (and often posted) photographs taken with some nice gear that were .....mehhh, ok. In your two examples, your software took what your camera gave you, but to keep with my train of thought, it was YOU that had the creative vision to make those two very nice photographs.

We always want better gear, but that gear doesn't make us a better photographer. I have an SB900 flash and my shots don't look anything like Joe McNally's. As you get better in your photography, you will of course be doing more pre-planning, and working toward straight out of the camera masterpieces, but it's the eye you're training in that process that is the real gift, because that eye will allow you to look at what might be 'turds', and help you understand how to polish them!
