I`m not a pro, but I will never sell my creative images for 50 cents...That is why I`m going to start shooting simple stuff (less time involved) for microstock such as Istock photo.

But would you sell one of your creative images for 50 cents/download if you knew that in a few years time the hundreds or thousands of downloads would add up to a very significant amount of money?

Isn't that really the right question to ask yourself?

Whenever I have a conversation with photographers about photo agencies (which admittedly isn't very often) it's always the same story: They're selling virtually nothing (or actually nothing) through Alamy, but their images are selling well through the microstock agencies. A couple of my friends are doing the same, and it's the same story from them too.

Mike

Same with me... I have a very limited amount of photo's on Dreamstime and about the same on Alamy (different ones). So far, i have earned almost 1000€ on dreamstime. On alamy, i have a grand total of 1 sale for 45€, from wich i keep 25.25€... At this rate i hit payout in 8 years :(

I'm using Dreamstime as well. How do you like it so far?

At the moment, i only have some holiday photos of landmarks. I never thought they would sell this good, since most of them weren't really taken with stock in mind. Best thing about dreamstime i think, is the level system and the way the search engine doesn't discriminate against older pictures. Since i don't want to make the effort to submit to different sites, i went exclusive, so +10% commission. This makes up for a decent income with minimal effort...

Kinda thinking about micro stock photo, though....but they failed me again for simple subject photography. I think my files were small....

Ok, I have been "dormant" for a while on this thread while I waited to see what happened with my Istock and Alamy accounts. Stopped contributing to both as nothing much was happening, left 46 images on Alamy, 10 on Istock. Just checked both and was pleasantly surprised!

After about a year and a half with each, Istock images have sold 6 times (3 dif images). This has netted me a whopping $9.35 total.

Having not sold a single image on Alamy, I was ready to pull the plug. This week it turns out I sold 3 images for $700. Yes, I will only get $420 of it after commissions but I must say it feels a lot better to see a "favorite image" go for a couple hundred dollars, vs. $2.

So, guess that is one more "Woo hoo" for Alamy, at least this far into my experiment. I am now motivated to begin uploading more images to Alamy at least.

Cool. If I may ask, can you provide links to the images that sold?

I have about 150 items on Alamy and I regularly sell about one image every 6 months. Some are for £20....others for a lot more. It's not a lot of income, but it's a folio that i'll slowly build up to a few thousand.

How do you guys get 50 megs on one pic? 5D2?

I only have 7 images there, and seems harder to pass more photo due to tough technical requirements. I guess I`ll just be very careful for my next submission.

They have new image guidelines now.
I submit 40D files without upsizing, and my 30D files only need to be 110% of native size to be big enough for Alamy.

When you open an image in photoshop, it tells you the uncompressed file size. 50MB uncompressed is the open size, but the stored jpg (which is in a compressed format) may only be a 3-6MB.
