Insurance for a Lens Rental

Hi,

I am going to rent a 70-200mm lens next week. I checked with Visa and they do not offer coverage on a rental item.

What do you do to insure this $3000 dollar lens while you have it. Does house insurance cover it?

Sometimes the company you rent from has insurance. I would check with your homeowners to see if they would. But if you have a business and business insurance it should cover.

Lensrentals.com offers insurance at an. additional charge but but worth it.

I'm not a business, so that option is out. The store doesn't offer insurance. VISA is out.

I guess its just hope for the best - might end up getting this lens afterall - but for all the wrong reasons!!

Be sure to read the fine print on any insurance coverage to understand exactly what it covers. Some do not cover theft, sand or water damage.

From the LensRentals policy: "Loss of the item, or part of the item, by misplacing it or theft is not covered under this policy"

Still it would cover if you dropped it or something like that.

cameralensrentals.com, LensRentals.com and others offer "rental insurance" which typically covers everything with a small deductible (such as $50). I would suggest, as jcox10 stated, to read the insurance policy stipulations.

What are you going to be doing with it that you're worried?

Surely by now you have seen or heard of the guy that rented the 800mm lens and it was accidently dropped overboard from a boat. It was all over the net.

Personal experience - I bought a 2 month old 24-70. About two hours later, while preparing to shoot a high school basketball game, an errant ball hit my camera and knocked it out of my hand onto the hardwood floor, lens first! I had to send it to Canon for repairs. Insurance deductible wasn't worth the hassle so I paid out of pocket for the repair.

Will be shooting pics at a hockey tournament. Thankfully the players are small enough that I won't have to worry about a puck hitting it - I think:p

Will be shooting from the penalty box.

I hadn't heard about that. I wonder how many years before he/she can laugh at that!!

I guess if it gets damaged, I will just buy it - at a reasonably depreciated price - I hope.

I think for what you are going to be doing, it will be fine. When you travel somewhere with a rented lens, that's when I would start to worry a bit more.

Thanks for the referral. I checked them out and of course they don't ship to Canada. But they did recommend lenslenders.ca, but of course they don't offer insurance - back to square one. LOL.
