Hi guys,

After reading so many review about this lens yet asking 17-55's owner, finally made my decision :)

Today I'm just bought canon 17-55 f2.8 IS USM, and it sharp!at the store I'm also tested 17-40, at the same aperture (f4), the canon 17-55 is sharper!..the built & zoom ring is not as smooth as 17-40/other L series IMHO. I'll give my further review about this lens next time.

So, after I got home, I'm just realize there is something strange that I wanted to ask you (17-55 owners) and it makes me scared!.
1. I can hear the IS work when I press half shutter (sound "shhisst.."), is it normal? (Cause my 18-55 IS don't make this sound)
2. This is what I did, press half shutter - sound "shhist" (IS work) - release my finger (cancel shutter) - after a while another sound "shhist" (like IS off)..is this normal too cause when the second "shhist" happened I don't touch anything??
3. Press half shutter - sound "shhish"(IS work) - press shutter - picture displayed - another sound "shhist" (like IS off)..is this allsoo normal too??

It happens sometimes, and it sounds like "clock ticks".Please for the 17-55's owners, maybe can give me some answer, it does makes me uncomfortable (especially there's an issue with the IS).Thanks before.:)

Regard,

Hendy

Too late, buddy. You've got bitten by the 17-55 bug. Now your symptoms will start to appear.
You'll feel in love for it from now on, each day more and more. You'll then start to pixel peep and get even more in love.
There's no cure for it.

Yep, this is all normal. Don't worry. I also have an 18-55 IS and it's much quieter than the 17-55, as you've found.

If you put your 18-55 up to your ear (physically) you'd hear it vibrate - the IS gyro in that is so small you can't hear it move.

Yeah, that normal. Mines did the same thing too when I used to own it. If it makes you feel any better, my 70-200/4L IS makes nosy too, it's just not as noticeable and pretty closes to silent.

My Sigma 70-200 makes a "cluck" sound; it focus's SOOOOO FAST that all you hear, and feel, is the shock wave as the gears and gizmos slam into place.

At low light I can here it searching; eeery whirring sound.

The only advantage to...

The only advantage to being hard of hearing is that I have never worried about the sound my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens is making.

Of course, I couldn't hear the screach of brakes and tires as a car tries to stop as it is coming right for me as I am busy shooting with my wonderful 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens. That could be a problem but, the camera sound isn't!
