Any good?

Someone has listed the following unused setup locally on craiglist:

(3) Halogen Lights (650W)
(3) Light Stands
(2) Softboxes
(1) Backdrop Stand (2 Stands + Crossbar)
(2) Carrying Bags

The halogen lights will be a source of frustration if you're trying to make photographs of anything with a pulse. They're ok if you need shop lights, though (This is not a brand issue, it's a halogen issue. They create a lot of heat and not much light). This is a guess, but the softboxes are probably designed to fit the halogen lights and won't be much good for use with studio strobes. The light stands, backdrop stands and bags are more versatile and can be used with other stuff.

That would depend on what kind of softboxes they are. If they can be used with any kind of speed ring, then there'd be no reason they can't be used with strobes. I have a softbox (actually an octobox) which I use with my video halogen lights but it's perfectly suitable for use with my strobes also. All I need to do is to swap out the speed ring.

Worth $150?

(The softboxes attach like the barndoors below) I'm thinking I may be able to add an L bracket to the softboxes to allow me to attach a speedlight firing into the softbox...

Check out B&H pricing on entry-level light stands, backdrop stands and softboxes. Only you can determine what this is worth to you.
