If there is no announcement of a mkIII will you be getting it? I think I will. I don't mind sacrificing the megapixel count. But then the 7k price is a lot also.

The 1Dx is in no way a replacement for the 5D series... Not even close. Your comparing a $2400 camera with a $7000 camera.

The 5D3 will come, just be patient.

As out of left field as the 1DX was, who really knows what Canon have up their sleeve...

Stay Tuned! :D

As with the others, I will keep my 5DII for awhile.

There are three basic directions the 5DII may evolve:
1. dSLR video market: presumably the Nov 3 planned announcement will be a new video product. This is an area the 5DII was an unexpected winner of a product for Canon. It initiated a new class of product using dSLR glass on a FF sensor. I do not see Canon giving up its lead on this line.
Could this be the 1DX? But it has no swiveling LCD, a must for dedicated video work. Perhaps the Nov 3 announcement will be a 1DX with a swivel LCD and peaking AF?

2. Low cost full frame sensor dSLR. This could simply be a 5DII sensor with an improved AF and a few electronic features. 5DIII? An affordable price would be important. However my guess is a high resolution, medium cost body.

3. Landscape/studio dSLR, to whom 12-14 fps and pro build, vertical grip, is not generally an issue. FF 30+mp and noise/ISO IQ on par with the 5DII or marginally better. Its not clear if Canon is going to compete in this area right away, but in the long run I can't see them giving up on it either.

Agreed. I can no longer guess as to what they will do with the 5D3. I hope they don't go too crazy with the MP count. I mean, it really doesn't matter as long as they can improve the high ISO noise levels one stop, and put a AF system in there that's worth a damn.

Nope.

It might eventually replace my 1D2, though. Or perhaps will drive down the price of the 1DIV, which cold easily replace my 1D2.

See, now the 1DX is FF and offers the "ballz out" AF that everyone wanted so are people now going to scream and cry if a new, near medium format-level camera doesn't have 1DX AF speed?

Keerist, I hope not...

Well, as the 7D was Canon's response to Nikon's D300, I see the 1D X as Canon's response to Nikon's D3s.

Now the only thing for us to see is whether the sensor lives up to the hype.

the glaring deficiency of 5d2 is the autofocus. thats the area it really needs improvement. also if the rumors of nikon d800 are true as a high megapixel pro body, at a fraction of the cost of 1dx, canon will loose market share to Nikon. Despite all of our complaining about the banding and autofocus, canon has done extremely well, mostly b/c of 5d2, b/c it is such a value as a high resolution full frame affordable video shooting camera. the 1dx market will still be a relatively small market. If canon had a pro autofocus on 5D2, I think it would still have another 1.5 years of shelf life. As things are now, I would be very surprised if there is no 5d3 in near future, with same/slightly higher MP, improved high iso and dynamic range, and 7D autofocus.

You now have "Pro AF" available in a FF body with the 1DX...

Problem Solved

As it looks right now, the 1DX will replace my 5D2. It has everything I've ever wanted in a camera!

My only concern is that it is so darn big and heavy. Probably gonna have to get a new bag too. lol
