I don't understand why people always say the Canon 28mm is unusable at f1.8. I use it at f/1.8 all the time and it works just fine. It's a great lens and has superior AF. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

I don't think the 28 is unusable at 1.8, however, the sigma is sharper at 1.4 than the 28 at 1.8, and has better IQ overall, so unless you need FF compatibility or the absolute best AF (because the AF on the sigma is plenty good anyway), there's no point getting the canon, since the sigma is a bit better in everything else including price.

i sold my sigma because of AF issues.. i bought the canon and can't be happier.. mine isn't as sharp wide open as my sigma, but it's way more reliable.. at f/2.2 and up they are pretty damn close though..

ok, thanks for all the valuable opinions, I've made up my mind, its not the Sigma 30 or Canon 28 but just order the Samyang / Rokinon 35mm f1.4.

As long as you're happy manual focusing with the tiny viewfinder on your camera, thats fine. I personally can't stand MF on my 450D.

OP, I just read the whole thread and am relieved you didn't get the 28. According to some people when you buy the ef 28mm f/1.8, not only do your photos become instantly unusable, but you lose your home and automobile too. :D

Hey, good luck with the Rokinon 35/1.4. Let us know how you like it. :)

am not quite sure, as I have neither use the ef28mm f/1.8 nor sigma 30mm f/1.4, but both lens don't fare very well in terms of optical quality at photozone reviews (external link).

A poor attempt on my part at sarcasm, lol. :o Optically, they're both pretty good except the borders (with the Sigma having a small, overall advantage in IQ while the Canon has small advantage in terms of AF, imo). The 28 (which I'm more familiar with) performs better on FF than it does on crop. On FF it is very usable wide open, while on a crop I treat it as an f/2 lens. BOTH lenses are capable of producing great images, as is the Rokinon I'm sure ;) .

hi twoshadows,

Prior to ordering the Rokinon 35, I've preference for the EF 28mm f/1.8 over the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. There are many reasons, e.g. low MFD, FF compatibility, its image quality (color, contrast etc), 58mm filters, its good AF and some others listed in this thread.

However, it seemed that the EF 28mm f/1.8 is not so good optically, while its sharp in the center, its relatively soft at the corners. Sheldon Nalos made direct comparisons (external link) between the EF 28mm f/1.8 and EF 28mm f/2.8, and the latter does better. You can view a direct comparison below.

I've noticed you preferred ya 28mm f/1.8 over 24L in ya gear list, just why?

here's another direction comparison from the-digital-picture (external link) ISO 12233 test results. view the comparisons carefully, varying the f-stops and you know there's not much difference between the sigma 30mm f/1.4 and canon 28mm f1/8. However, there's substantial difference in sharpness and IQ for the comparison between Samyang / Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 and Canon 28mm f/1.8.

canon EF 28mm f/1.8 @ f/4.0 vs canon EF 28mm f/2.8 @ f/4.0 (external link)

sigma 30mm f/1.4 @ f/2.8 vs canon EF 28mm f/1.8 @ f/2.8 (external link)

Keep in mind that TDP does not test multiple copies of lenses (certainly not enough for a scientific sample) and that the Rokinon will not AF. I know for me, that I would miss many more shots by having manual focus every one (because I shoot mostly people). So any extra sharpness would be lost in a complete blur or in likely misfocuses. YMMV.

I'm not sure about the test image posted - seems to be a problem with the 28 f/1.8 in that one. I don't think it's anywhere near that bad (or the 28 f/2.8 any where near that good ;) ). I think if you need sharp corners, you might consider the 35L, otherwise you'll probably have to resign yourself to soft corners. It's kind of a joke and not a joke about my preferring the 28 over the 24LII. I sold off the 24LII because it was overkill for my needs - too big and I didn't need the extra 2/3 stop over the 28 - but also because I found the 28 would focus in some low light situations where the 24LII wouldn't. It's not scientific by any means as I didn't have the two lenses side by side, but that was my impression.

hi twoshadows, thanks for sharing, appreciate it. 24L is 650g, and 28 is only 309g. Its quite a difference.
