Link here (external link).

But it'll be a big seller, no doubt. (Whenever it ships, of course. Which will probably be sometime in the next Presidential administration.)

I would've thought they'd get a bigger hit by releasing a new 24-70/2.8 instead. I mean the 28-135 is still being used as a kit lens... and the current 24-105 isn't all that bad (better than the 28-135).

Then again, they gone and updated the EF-S 18-55is II so what the heck do I know.

I think it could do with a bit of an upgrade, but doesnt too much. It is a very good lens as it stands, and would happilly use the current one, i wish when canon released the 15-85, that they would have at least made that constant f/4

:)

The 24-105 is a great lens as is. I agree that upgrading the 24-70 to IS would be the ticket.

Yeah, this bit of news is anticlimactic. No one is asking for an update to this lens yet still nothing of an update to the one everyone is asking for. IS argument aside, the 24-70L could use a general upgrade and update to keep pace with other top-level fast standard zooms on the market.

The 24-105L? Meh.

Much better, IMHO. I have the 24-105, and had a 28-135. The latter is pretty good, the former is very good.

Wasn't the 18-55 update only made to make it cheaper to produce? (e.g. instead of plastic white square -> printed white square)

It's probably intended as a kit lens for the 5D3.

The 24-105L is a fine lens as it is, especially sharpness-wise; an update to improve the bokeh (especially for portraits), however, would be very welcome and complete the lens as an all-in-one travel option.

I'd like to see a new one paired with the MkII replacement.

Of course there is going to be a mkII version of the 24-105 since I just purchased one a month ago! But seriously no update to the 24-70 that everybody has been screaming for?????

I think the 24-105L needs an upgrade before the 24-70L does. The optics on the 24-70L are awesome. With the improved ISO performance on newer cameras, it's difficult to see why IS is needed. I'd much rather see a 24-105L II with improved optics. The optics are what keeps me away from the current version.

I also think the 17-40L would benefit from an update, as the optics keeps me away from this lens as well.

I must of got a good 24-105, because my results have always been awesome. Even comparing with such lenses as the 70-200 II, 135L, 85L, etc...

This is why I let my 24-105L go. Performance didn't impress me the slightest bit.

The optics on the current 24-105L are razor sharp.

Where it is sorely lacking is in the bokeh department. If they can fix this, giving the lens nice, smooth bokeh, it'll be the go-to lens if you don't need f/2.8 in this focal length.

As ro the 17-40 (and 16-35), Canon would do well to release a corner-to-corner sharp UWA zoom - after all, Nikon has two of them...
