Someone will say it, so why not the 17-55 IS?

Have you considered and dismissed the 17-50/17-55 focal range, and the 15-85 option? If so, do you need 2.8? The 24-105 is a very nice lens, especially with the IS. I had one and liked it...but did wind up feeling the need for 2.8. After the swap, I did miss the 24-105's focal range until I picked up a 100mm.

Forget the 24-70 or 24-105, not the best lens choice for your crop.

Like other have said for the thousandth time, get 17-5X.

If I really have to choose one, i'd say 24-70.

My goal is to pick up a very sharp walk around lens. I have yet to look in to the 17-55 is f2.8 but will do.

I went with the 24-70L 2.8, Its focal was a tad wider than my 30 prime and I gave up a bit from my 85 prime.

But many times, my 85 would pin me to a wall and still to close. So the 24-70 covered a great range of what I shoot indoors.

17-55 is sharper than both 24-70 and 24-105 when used on crop (check review sites such as Dxo, the digital picture etc).

however 24-70 and 24-105 perform better when on ff.

If you are primarily after a sharp lens and not too fussed about other things like weather sealing and build quality, 17-5X is your best bet.

The 17-55 is an awesome lens in terms of IQ and ideal for 550D.

Here is a link to a review of the 17-55 IS (external link). I'm sure you've all ready read it, though. It's a great lens for crop body. If you're in the market for a wide-angle zoom, I'd suggest the Canon 10-22mm.

The sigma 17-50 is just as good as the canon 17-55 except it is slightly slower in terms of focus speed, and it costs $450 less, has better build quality, and comes with a hood and longer warranty, so I'd suggest getting the sigma instead of the canon. That saves you even more money to use on other things.

I've used the 24-70 on my 450D before and while the lens was pretty nice, it felt bad on my camera because it was too front-heavy. I wouldn't like using it as a walkaround lens.

I would go with 17-5xmm either tamron or sigma. 17-55 IS is just too expensive compared to those.
