Where I shoot there is good lighting and several others will throw a 1.4X on the 70-200 and shoot from the deck. When my 300 f/4 arrives I'm going to be messing around with that. But if you are using strobes you can get away with slower glass so that would really change up the suggestions a bit.

I've shot hockey games with my 70-300 IS non-L before and it worked well, though I was at 300mm most of the time. To deal with the low light I underexposed and "pushed" the raw exposures in photoshop. 60D, Sigma 8-16, Canon 17-55 2.8 IS, Canon 100mm 2.8L Macro, Canon 100-400L

I shoot from penalty box so 70-200 covers the majority of ice. Crop cameras give a bit more reach. 1DX , 7D,16-35, 24-70 2.8II, 2.8L II, , 70-200 f2.8LII IS, 300 f2.8L IS, 500 f4 IS, 100-400L, Canon 100 2.8 macro, Canon 1.4X, 580ex, AB800X4

I could see how that lens would be perfect for hockey, but geeze you'd need some real bright lights.

Yah the NHL arenas have strobes permanently setup from the ceiling, so photographers just have the remote triggers on their cameras and the strobes fire. But the OP never posted where he is shooting, depending on lighting, something like the 135L may be better because it can shoot at f/2. Even shooting from close range I think the 135L would still be a bit short for focal length. R3 | R6 II | 8-15L | 15-35L 2.8 | 28-70L F2 | 85L 1.2 | 70-200L 2.8

Just got to know where to get the shot with the lens options you have...it's all about timing and location and often a little luck My Gear:
