How about this one? I liked how lines are all over the place.

You want me to play on that! (external link) by kenjancef (external link), on Flickr

The problem you have with this image, is that the background is too easy to see so the eye is drawn all over the place...

What you needed to do, is capture the lines without the background noise, which might be a matter of changing your aperture, or changing your point of view. :-)

Good point, thanks. I would have thought that the wider I go the less detail I would see in the lines towards the back, but I will try it.

Thanks. :)

If you have a Depth of Field preview button on your camera (Generally a small button right near the lens mount). Press that and play with the aperture, you might be able to still get enough detail in the back lines, while blurring the background. It'll take some playing to do though. This is a GREAT exercise for gaining control of depth of field... Real challenge :D
Edit: Saw your gear list, forgot what thread this was, something tells me you probably knew about the DOF preview button....

I had $5000 invested in my gear before I ever found out what that button did, and honestly I still rarely use it.

Lol... Yea, I know where a lot of the buttons are, but how to use them is a different story... :)

I just got a decent tripod today, but since it's supposed to be a crappy day tomorrow in my part of the earth, even ending in wet snow tomorrow night (UGH!), I will try more on Friday. Thanks again for the help, very appreciated.

Lol... I hear you. But I kinda did things backwards: I was lucky enough to be able to afford the gear I wanted, in the span of 10 months, so I knew where I wanted to go, and got the parts to get there, now all I need to do is learn how to drive. That's why I love it here, you guys are such AWESOME help! And I love to learn...

See I can work my rebel like the back of my hand XD Except for that obscure A-dep feature... And someone mentioned the weather being nasty, I think the 7d and 24-70 are weather sealed. So no excuses :D
