Aren't there any other old guys here? Listen, my children, once upon a time there was a photographer who used very small little cameras so as to take pictures discreetly of people in public doing what people in public do. Nowadays, we call that "street photography." He used a little understood material called "film" to record his imagery on.

Henri Cartier-Bresson didn't want people to pay attention to him photographing, he wanted people to continue to do what they did. The little cameras he used came with a shiny metal top that drew attention. Eventually he began taping over the shiny metal, including on the lenses, with black tape--to avoid reflections and to make his cameras even more discreet.

So, over the years, news photographers would pay homage to the Godfather of photojournalism by taping over their Leicas, Nikons, Canons, Rolliflexes, Hasselblads until the manufacturers one day decided they would start offering their product in all black bodies. This is before your time. You probably think the few chromed bodies offered are a recent innovation.

The one thing the manufacturers couldn't bring themselves to do was to put their name in a discreet location, so they leave a very visible white logo on the front of the cameras. Photojournalists, once again emulating the master, tape over the logo to keep their cameras discreet, non reflective, and to avoid drawing attention to their cameras.

That's the truth as I learned it before you were born, so there!

So whats discrete about a 1DmkIII with a big white 600mm L telephoto lens?

Tools: Canon 5DmkII, Sony a6400, Fujifilm X100V

Well I learned long before cameras were digital, long before computers were solid state, the in some instances pro's were asked to mask out brand name if they were shooting at an event sponsored by a competing brand.

Say you were at an event sponsored by NIKON, and they did not want competitors names showing up in images from the event. So you were asked to conceal the name.

True? I dunno, but that is what I was told.

One thing could be true, some networks might not allow any logo on the broadcast.

There's your answer

Obviously if you put a 600mm while L lens on your camera you aren't trying to be discrete.

Most of the series crime shows use the Nikons and don't hide the logos. I always thought it worked out where if Canon or Nikon didn't pay to be shown (advertised) then the name were hidden. Otherwise they are shown. It is weird to see them on big budget films blacked out. And some of the cameras they use are old ones. Spiderman's Peter Parker taking photos with an old camera is amazing.

it's a mute point.

In this doggy-dog world, brands are literally a diamond dozen. The tape goes hand-and-hand with underminding them.

For all intensive purposes, you maybe right. Irregardless, it begs the question.

Posers.

It's like blanking out the Ferrari logo on your car and expecting people to think your Testarossa is a Tercel.

I spoke to a Nikon Ambassador once, he had taped the logo on one of his cameras. It was a Canon 1D Mark III with a MP-E 65 Macro attached. He just "needed" that macro and no Nikon lenses could do the same job, he said ;-)a
