Where to visit within a few hours flight of the UK?

I am trying to find a suitable place to go for either a long weekend or week, that's a few hours from the UK, and has impressive scenery to photograph. Can anyone recommend a location? Iceland is my number 1 choice at the moment, but the costs involved after getting there (flights are cheap) is slightly eye watering

Any inspiration would be greatly appreciated.

Mostly travelling around (especially car rental).

I'm also really struggling to pick a time of year to go!

Well this time of year you might see the northern lights but in Summer you have a day long sunset and sunrise.

I was looking at 4x4 rental, saw a 5 dayer for £250-£300, not a great 4x4, petrol but hey...

Ireland. Cliffs of Moher, Slieve Legue, etc.

Southern France, Italy, Anywhere in Eastern Europe (Poland, Czech, Baltics are all pretty), Ireland, even Russia - countless opportunities. I'd go for the cheapest flight/accommodation package - when I was in the UK (10 years ago now), there were plenty of cheap flights going - not a lot of countries in Europe where there isn't great scenery.

If it's city/urban scenery you are after, you can't go wrong with a lot of Eastern European countries - I did Poland, Czech Rep, Baltics, Russia - ALL had fantastic cities, as well as countryside. A lot of scenes you won't see anything like in other "usual" western European countries.

OP: whereabouts are on in the UK ?

I ask because it makes a difference - if you are "up north" Scotland is quite close, for me its an hour flight in to Edinburgh - from here you could get to Stirling in under an hour and there is some amazing scenery up that way.

I think about an hour from London are the Channel Islands.

I think Spain is a couple of hours flight, so thats about your limit.

What about some places in the UK ? Jurassic coast (dorset) ? Dartmoor ? lots of scenery in Yorkshire..

If you need a little inspiration there is a magazine here called "outdoor photography". Each month they have a list of 10 places to shoot with a few details and then a couple more with lots more information. May be worth checking out.

I am in Cardiff.

Cardiff airport is useless though, and Bristol is very limited. However, Heathrow is an easy 2hr train ride away.

I used to live in Dorset, so have done the Jurassic coast, and used to live in Plymouth, so Dartmoor is ticked off as well

So far i'm thinking Iceland is the best option, and where i've wanted to go to for a long time. It's just not cheap.

Norway also appeals, and is cheap(ish) to get to.

One problem i have is i'm very tall, so flying Ryanair, or Easyjet, is not in any way appealing! Which is annoying, as those are the airlines with all the sub £100 flights.

Can anyone help with route ideas for one week around Iceland?

Krakow is worth a visit.
