Maybe.

In theory canon could have made this early announcement of the 1DX because they have some other high end camera they want to release before the 1DX and they didn't want to release two upgrades to the 5D line between 1Ds upgrades.

Anything is possible...

I think Canon went with an unusually long lead time here because:

1) They've hemorrhaged some pros to the dark side.
2) London Olympics are coming and they want to spark some excitement within the pro ranks that are still on board.
3) They want to try and re-convert those that may be on the fence.

Doesn't Canon and Nikon introduce a new flagship camera before every Olympics?

I'm sure the R&D Department at both companies has the date circled in bright red...

They probably have a countdown clock that starts the second the cauldron is extinguished at the previous venue.

Rather than reading through 91 pages. I'm curious how many people will make the jump from the 5D2 to the 1DX.

Digital: Canon 5D2,5Dc,40D

I'd make the jump from the 7D if i could afford it. Then again if I was spending that much money I would spring for a 200 f/2 first. Although, a 200 f/2 with this beast at ISO 6400 must be killer for indoor sports. Must be nice to have money.

After the 1D3 came out Nikon made an active play for Canon users--providing loaner gear @ major events to credentialed shooters and those they won over were given "assistance" in making the switch.

For sure those that purchased through Roberts Imaging had their new "dark" gear hand tuned and shipped directly from Nikon Professional Services.

And there were more than a few.;)

I spent a little time today with the only 1DX body in Canada. all I can say is...

Wow!

I'm glad I put my pre-order in!

The autofocus seems instantaneous - the body feels perfect in my hands. Everything about it was very natural - from the menus, to the button placement. Of course I didn't have as much time as I wanted with it, but from what I experienced, it can't be here too soon.

There was no card in the camera but from what I saw on the LCD, the images were outstanding. even the 51,200 ISO images were crazy clean.

Regards,
Jim
