So I started picking some of the better DJ shots I've gotten in the last year or so and fine-tuning them to be quality headshots. Lemme know whatcha think!

I prefer the ones where their heads aren't turned quite so far away ... don't have to be straight on but the more at you the better. I like the ones from lower angle and I like the ones with turntables (or whatever the round gizmos are.) Nice collection going in any case.

Being a turntablest myself from the 80's I have to say I like the ones with the gear in them... But still great captures. Looks like you dragged the shutter and used flash to stop the subject dead. Great Work.

My favorite shot from a photography point of view is the Dnaiel J shot, but I wish it had some headphone or something else a little in the photo.

My only suggestion is to use the natural light as much as possible. I like to when i have it, but I am also user of second curtain and bounce flash. Many clubs are dinly lit and leave no choice for flash.

Here are a couple of my favorite shots, from my collection

Dj Baby Anne - Queen of the Funky Breaks

Actually, that Daniel J shot wasn't even during a show, but it's the only good shot I have of him out of the many that I've taken within the last couple of years. It was primarily just for his website.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, the events I go to to shoot aren't typically well-lit enough for me to do much with natural light. I wish I had a 2.8L that I could shoot with so I could rely on natty light more often.

There's actually a pretty big event coming up next Saturday that I'll be taking photos at all day and night that I'll include a link to next week. It's gonna have DJ Rap, Dara, Tommie Sunshine, John Kelley, Nigel Richards, and about 47 other DJs, 4 bands, a car show, and a fashion show on the list. Can't wait for this one. ;-)a

some good pics there, much appreciated by a fellow ex DJ as myself :)

Noted with lack of lighting at gigs and that, and even more noted with clubs using technics cdj's!! nice :D

how did u get a gig taking pics of djs and stuff? what do u need portfolio wise? I have enquired about doing some of the oriental dj gigs around the uk but it seems they prefer normal flashed shots from point and shoot cams because they are produced just as well. Plus people get less scared compared to someone holding an SLR i guess

Thanks for the comments. As far as how I got into it, I'm also a DJ (www.djspiral.com), and pretty much all of these guys I hang out with (meaning the locals, not the big names). Just so happens that I'm the only one with any photographic training, so I took advantage of it.

Great shots! I use the Sony headphones in the first shot, atleast they look like my 700's.

Yep yep. Those are the 700's. I use a cheap pair of KOSS headphones myself, while many others prefer the Pioneer ones.

The 1000's?

Anyways, I don't want to thread jack here. Great pictures! I wish I could get some one to shoot me while I am behind the decks.

Sorry, but is that an ECLER or RANE mixer in the first shot?

It's a Rane. A friend of mine who owns that works in a place called Sounds Great, and they deal with all types of PA equipment, DJ equipment, studio equipment, and so on.

Awesome, RANE is quality. I am looking into an ECLER NUO 3.

Again, OT, sorry.

I don't mind at all. This type of stuff is all I do, so the conversation is welcomed.

Actually, a bit more on-topic I guess, I just bought the 10-20mm Sigma. Should be at my door this afternoon. Can't wait to try it out and get some photos like this that do include the equipment. Wide angle shots for stuff like this are awesome, and I've been missing out. This Saturday should be fun; I get to try it out on some big names.

EricKonieczny, this kind of photo is exactly what I'm talking about:

Man, and I need to get a Stofen OmniBounce bad. My flash, even bounced off a shirt, is still pretty harsh.

Ahhhhhhhhh.....memories.

Nice to see the wheels of steel are still in the mix.

I see they are still using big black CD's......:)

I used to be part of Trax/American Music Pool in LA............are those things still around? Must be....

I bet if I look hard enough, I'll find a crate in the garage somewhere.
