I have a basically brand new one that I love the photos it produces, but the focal length just isnt for me. Such a wonderful lens, shoot me a pm if you are looking for one. Jake

Damn, My sigma 50mm arrived today. Oops I mean Zeiss.
All of my shots were coming out like this.

This thing has a wicked bad front focus on the focus confirm chip.

Here it is with 0 MA focus on the 6:

WOW not even close. I tried several shots and all had the same result.

Here it is with + 20 MA Focus on the 6:

Much better but still not correct. Looks like it would need +25 or +30 to be correct which unfortunately is beyond the 7D's abilities.

Question is should I pay to send my new 1300 dollar lens to zeiss or should it just go back to B+H?

^Instead of shooting rulers and stuff indoors, why not take the lens out to test it?

I did take it out but unfortunately everything was out of focus (well some of the stuff in front of my subjects was in focus). The first picture is just an example. I only used the ruler to diagnose the problem.

Maybe get another copy? My lens works bang on with no MA.

Yeah I think you are right. I met a guy in a park using one and he let me try it (while he tried my 70-300L) and that copy was perfect too. Almost as easy as focusing the C/y Zeiss 28 F2.8 (easiest focusing MF lens ever).

It's easier to return it and get another copy. No sense in going through all that hassle to MA it. :)

Have you tried adjusting the viewfinders diopter?

Edit: Oh, you're using focus confirm. I think most people find that this function is only really good for getting approximate focus (with enough Depth of Field to cover error) not critical focus. Shooting at close distances wide open will only expose how inaccurate Focus Confirm can be.
