5d II, slow transfer rate, some files corupt?

Hi, I wonder if anyone has experienced this before.

I import my files via a CF card reader, the transfer rate is pretty slow and takes about an hour to move 300 files. Then some files double up, one shown as a normal CR2 file, one as if there is no data in the file.

I formatted the card again, to no avail.

The card is a sandisk 8GB 60mb/sec
Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Desktop or laptop? My ancient card reader, USB 1 I think, is that slow, but using an adapter to the PCI slot on my laptop I can copy about 80 5D2 CR2s in a minute.

CF to Express Card, but I've never seen an Express Card/PCI slot on a desktop, that's why I asked. So not much help to you, sorry.

Is the card reader a built-in card reader or an external one?

USB 2.0 readers can vary in their speeds, so trying a newer model could help, and make sure you get a good brand. I've found Sandisk to be reliable.

I have a Sandisk Imagemate 12-in-1 reader that is a few years old, so certainly not the fastest out there. It transfers 8 GB in about 8 minutes.

The model # is SDDR-89 V4 (we are talking about the insert piece here).

They have put out a series of these things. I have three, an SDDR 86 (very slow) and an SDDR 88 (in between) so it makes a difference.

Hi Tony, I never had a problem with it till recently all of a sudden, speed had dropped.

Its a TEAC internal one which plugs straight onto the motherboard USB 2.0 port.

Well, hmm, try a newer external reader?

When you put regular data on the card, does it still behave the same way? Or does it only happen with data recorded from the camera? You can try copying in some movies or something from your computer to the card and then back to the computer. Then you know if it's a problem with the files or a problem with the card/reader. Other things to check are if the card has gone bad by checking another card to see if it has the same problem. I'd also do a system restore if it happened recently after you did an update to your system. Sometimes a driver change can make a huge difference.

USB card readers can be weird. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. Sometimes reinstalling the OS helps. Getting a new card reader is probably a better, cheaper choice.

I did a clean re-instal of windows last week, after some dramas. But the problem is still there. Seems I might go buy a new card reader.

My suggestion, get a usb 3.0 internal pci card. Then move to a 3.0 reader. You will definitely
see a speed difference.

Try the transfer straight from the camera. If the problem persists, it's either the card or the camera (then try a different card, to see if it's the camera or the card).

If not, it's the reader.
