If you find out let me know as I too missed it. ;) I dont see anything there that would register as a good or interesting picture - but I also dont have $4.3Mill though would not save this shot if it were free.

Think I may have to up my prices a bit - a hand full of zeros after each price.

Art is not logic, it is investment into a hype. Get a name and whatever you do call it art and people pay whatever for it. In these days of financial crices it is called an safe investment...

Living in Austria, I am so glad that there is stuff like Gimp out there...
I am a happy giver, so if you find any misspelling in my text, you can keep them... :)

Very true indeed! I mean check out famous paintings by Piet Mondrian... All his paintings are black squares with yellow, blue, or red painted inside of them lol.

I'm sure it would look better (and worth more money?) if a little boat was Photoshopped onto the water - no? :-)

This is nothing new. Go big or go home if you want perceived monetary value of your print to go through the roof. The current game in the art world is duplication of a simple concept to a grand scale.

Anyway, I suggest you look at Gursky's other work or shooting process before (or after) calling it a weak photograph as it fits his brand. Multiple 4 x 5 images stitched for these panoramas isn't exactly an easy process.

I've seen his work before and it is OK I guess. Not my thing really.

People investing in Art are investing! Who cares what the product is, as long as it gains value over time and/or when the artist dies. Rich people would much rather say, "I have a print from this famous person!" and not "Nobody knows who this guys is, but the print is fantastic!"

Being a famous photographer is 99% marketing yourself and 1% photography. I see countless people on flickr who blow away todays very top professionals in quality and creativity, but they are nobodies who's work is worth no money yet.

You'll need a snappy Artist Statement to go along with that price tag.

Create one here: http://10gallon.com/statement2000/ (external link)

Here's mine:

Miguel Blanco's Artist Statement

Through my work I attempt to examine the phenomenon of Pepé Le Pew as a methaphorical interpretation of both Andy Warhol and procrastinating.

What began as a personal journey of crapism has translated into images of burritos and butt cheeks that resonate with Polack people to question their own pinkness.

My mixed media box embody an idiosyncratic view of Jerry Falwell, yet the familiar imagery allows for a connection between Kurt Cobain, ball bearings and frijoles negros beans.

My work is in the private collection of Charo who said 'hot damn!, that's some real swimming Art.'

I am a recipient of a grant from Folsom Prison where I served time for stealing mugs and tie clips from the gift shop of The Creation Museum. I have exhibited in group shows at Arby's and Kamakura Gallery, though not at the same time. I currently spend my time between my crawl space and Berlin.

That print is very, very large and has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. It's actually had lots Photoshopped OUT of it :)

I love Gursky's work. Has to be looked at as a body to be fully appreciated I think. Good to see that he's regained the most expensive photo crown!
