I think it takes an artists eye, to see the possibilities in a chosen subject for IR.

That many of the people doing it get caught up more in the technique and the overall aesthetic, as opposed to whether or not that overall aesthetic meshes well with the picture. I'm actually often guilty of this myself. But yeah...when it's appropriate, it can be awesome. All I'm saying is...I'll probably love infrared photography until the day that I die. But when people criticize infrared as being gimmicky, I think that that's often a valid opinion. I might not always agree with them, but I totally see their point. EXACTLY! Well said. -Jim

I've seen too many people, enamoured by the novelty of IR share images that have few redeeming features. I've been guilty of this--how many IR photos of driveways in the noon hour does the world really need? There are certain scenes and compositions IR can render stunning that are otherwise pedestrian, but by and large IR doesn't exempt one from basic rules of composition and other factors that make for quality imagery. That, I suspect, is why it is so often dismissed as a gimmick. I always like the 'china doll' quality that IR imparts on shots of young ladies. -Jim
