When I try to select "Reset all" from the settings menu on my SX30 the item is greyed-out and so cannot be used.

Same on my new SX40.

I've tried various mode settings etc. but I still can't make this item show as available. What am I missing?

Shooting mode and playback mode both show the "reset all" option greyed out both on the SX30 and a new SX40.

I have never used this option on any Canon before, and haven't ever had a problem with any other settings.

I don't have an SX30, but I can't replicate that in my SD990, SX1 or SX230. Tried several odd-ball settings that I thought might give you that, like locking the card or resetting and seeing if it would grey that out if you were already at default. Maybe it's in "Self Timer" or some such?

Make sure you have the LCD flipped open and enabled. You cannot do Reset All when using the EVF (Electronic Viewfinder), for some reason known only to Canon. The menu item will be displayed grayed-out when using the EVF.

Strange - I can do Reset All in the EVF on my SX-1. And it's not apparent from the SX30 manual that it needs to be done with the LCD.

Very strange indeed. It is documented on a Canon support site article. (If there is a way to link to a specific Canon "answer", I can't figure it out, or I would provide a link.) The item describes the SX20, but comes up on the SX30 support page, so I assume it applies to those and probably the SX40 also. It is not in the manual, as far as I can tell. I can confirm the SX20 behaves this way, and I think it likely to be the cause of teekay's issue.

AHA - Thank you, Lar! :D

That solves the problem - a most unusual Canon quirk. It is the same on the new SX40 and not mentioned in the manual there either.

http://www.usa.canon.com …cameras/powershot_sx30_is (external link) may or may not help. But I found lar55's answer at the top of the list when searching Canon's Support area on the SX30 for "How do I "Reset All"".

Good point - I'll check there first in future.

You have to read all the way to the bottom to see that qualifier about needing to use the LCD, not the EVF, though. I'll ask my sister to check her (my old) SX10 to see how that works.

Apparently the SX10 also allows "Reset All" from the EVF, although Sue didn't want to lose all her settings.
