Hey guys! I currently have a Sigma 170-500 and was thinking about replacing it with a 2x teleconverter and pairing it with my 70-200 f/2.8 non-is. Just wondering if you guys have any feedback on this idea, thanks!

For a similar comparison, I have used my 70-200 f/2.8 IS with the Canon 2x TC and also my Sigma EX 50-500 HSM. The teleconverter slows the focus down on the main lens quite a lot. The 70-200 TC combo focused slower and wasn't as sharp as the Sigma 50-500. The TC is nice as a convenience since it is tiny compared to a longer focal length lens but if you have the long lens with you, then it generally is the better choice.

Of course your results might be different since the 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS might be sharper than my IS version, and your 170-500 might be a bit less sharp than the 50-500 so it might end up being a smaller difference.

Thanks for the response, yeah that is what I was thinking. How slow is the autofocus with the combination? As of right now the 170-500 has to be manually focused because it is both to loud for wildlife and to slow for anything in flight. So it wont take to much to be an improvement.

I think that Canon lenses focus at about half speed with a 2x teleconverter which still isn't bad. Maybe you could try it out at a camera store.

The 50-500 has fast, silent HSM focus so I normally would prefer that to the 70-200 with a TC.

it's a 170-500mm though...which doesn't have HSM

i think taking it to a store is your best bet...or you could always plunk done some money on a rental

I use to have a sigma 150-500 os I now have a 400 f5.6L. I have a buddy I shoot with regularly and I can tell you the 170-500 is slow to focus and generally soft. He regularly misses bird in flight shots and I hear a buzzing from his lens I can't imagine the 70-200 with a 2x tc being any worse. He is going to be upgrading to a 300 f4 with a 1.4x tc soon. I had the 300 f4L with a 1.4x tc before the 400 f5.6L and I can say it works very well. The 150-500 is far better the the 170-500.
