Hi everyone, this is my first post, dont know where to ask so...

Finally,I upgraded to DSLR (Entry level). I am an international student here in Finland, and so being friendly with my pocket i decided to go for Rebel XS. I am visiting Lapland for winter holidays, and other places so i really want a good lens.. Which can be the bestest lens for xs? 55-250?

If you're looking for a good walk-around lens and you're on a budget, go for the EF-S 17-85mm. :)

Or the Tamron 17-50mm f 2.8. Some say the non-VC version is sharper than the VC version but be sure to test both lenses to see which works for you.

It has been my experience that the 18-55 IS that came with my XS is an excellent optic, so rather than buying another lens that duplicates these focal lengths, I'd be more inclined to do as you were suggesting and go with the 55-250. I've never shot with one (I owned a 70-210 EF and a 75-300 EF before I bought my XS), but by all accounts I've read, the 55-250 is a very nice lens. And it will dovetail perfectly with what you already have -- assuming you bought the camera/lens kit, of course.

i suggest saving 500$ and buying a used 70-200 f/4L on this forum over a 55-250. i have 75-300, and 55-250 and wish i just bought the cheapest 70-200 lens

I bought my 55-250 IS from B&H for 119.00 shipped using a 10% discount code during a sale a few months ago. Its more now but id still buy it over most others. It showed up and was in brand new condition, couldnt ask for much better, i quit using my kit lens and my 70-300mm lens since i bought this and my 50mm.

Guys i am so in delima..

There is no perfect answer for your question. All EF lenses work with the XS - there aren't any issues about the XS that would mean a particular lens is better than another. The only thing that might affect a lens choice is the 1.6x crop factor (but that is not only the XS) - this means that a wide angle lens will not be as wide as it would be on a full-frame/film body. You need to buy lenses that work for what you want to photograph. If you like to shoot landscapes, look for something wide. If you like to shoot wildlife, look for a telephoto.

Decide if you want a zoom or a fixed focal length. Zooms are flexible but fixed FL usually have higher image quality and are faster (smaller minimum f-number/maximum aperture) for the same money. After you know what sort of shooting you want to do - try to buy the best lens that you can afford. If you buy a a lower level lens now, you will probably want to upgrade sooner than you think.

If you want to shoot indoors without a flash, you want the fastest lens you can afford - but the faster the lens, the more expensive. It also depends on what lens(es) you already have - as was already mentioned. Don't forget to consider used lenses - if you buy from a reputable source, they can be a great value.

Think abou those things and repost -tell us what you like to shoot and how much you can spend. Then we can give you some better suggestions and hopefully not confuse you even more. But no matter what, have fun with your new XS!

I can spend 300 bucks to the max.
First i really appreciate everybody's suggestion on the mater. Thanx kfyount.

Well, i travel alot, so its definitely outdoor photography that i do most, incl. plants and animals on that. I also have keen interest in shooting stuffs, things inside my house, and the portrait of my partner too. I am a metalhead so i often go to concerts, gigs and shoot the playings, band portrait.
The thing is that i dont restrict myself under certain circumstances and nobody does. So keeping all these things mind, i am seeking your help.

^Do you have the kit lens (18-55 IS)? Or are you comepletely lensless for now?

I had the kit lens first. Then I got the 55-250 to extend my range. Then I got the nifty fifty for fun and artsy stuff and because it's such a good value. I'm very pleased with my lenses. I'll likely upgrade the kit lens at some point, but I'm in no rush to.

Oh, and the 55-250 and nifty fifty I bought used from the classifieds here. I've bought lots of used stuff there -- it's where I would look first once you decide what you want.
