I have tried taking many pictures of birds in flight, but tend to get very deep shadows. Do any of you use fill flash for your shots?

That's what I have been doing, but brightening the shadows introduces noise to the image and I was wondering if that was something I have to deal with or if people have had success with a fill light.

The trick is to get the sun in the right position relative to the bird in the first place. Failing that, a flash with a Better Beamer can work wonders.

sometimes I will increase fill light to a large degree - but also decrease Brightness so noise can be minimized. and, luckily, you have excellent noise reduction software in Lightroom.

if the original shot was using a low ISO (sub 800) then increasing fill light of course will not be as much a concern.

I've had pretty good success with that balance technique of increasing Fill Light / decreasing Brightness / NR.

This evening I took various shots of a cormorant and it had severe shadows underneath and I did what I could with it but in the end it simply was not usable - Fill Light was 100% and had to do a major crop = fail.

It has been quite awhile since I last visited this thread, and all I can say is WOW!
There are some amazing flight images here!

Here are a couple of my feeble attempts to see if I can re-kindle the fire here.

A few Purple Martins...with their dragonflies and a few other pics. I still have a lot to learn, but I like these. Critique always welcome and encouraged!

How do you folks get those larger images in there? It keeps rejecting me saying it's over the 150kb limit, but I see some much larger photos in here that have to be larger than that? BY the time I take 20 mb file and chop it down to 150kb, there's nothing left! I'm all ears.
