Gels on Canon's flash

Ok I want to buy some gels but have no clue as to what brand is most used by you guys here on the forum also is there a device that holds these gels in place or does it come with the gel's? So what do you use (gels)? and how do you keep them in place on the 580 or 430 exii's?

Honl makes a good setup... Honl SpeedStrap for attaching them ($10) and Honl Color Correction Gels or Color Effects Gels (depending on what you're going for) for $20. Honl has a whole system based around the SpeedStrap and you then don't have to glue on velcro.

Buy a sample kit and use a small piece of scotch tape. I like the rogue gel kit now, It has wings and uses a band to hold them on the face of the speedlight. Also they are Lee Filters Gels (one of the best). On a side note: Hell I like all the Rogue stuff, I have the flash bender and snoot/grids and the gel kit.

I started with the Rosco sample kits CineGel and Roscolux you can request a swatch book for $7.50 Link here, then I got theRosco strobist collection

There you go. I still have my Rosco samples but use the Rogue kit, It's 20 bucks but I like the way it works and has a nice case to keep everything in. The Rosco's end up all over and dont always cover the full face of the strobe. Lastly colored candy wrappers work, you can buy colored plastic wrap at the dollar store for wrapping flowers, and small gifts, can also find that stuff at art supply houses.

Lastly here is a link to a DIY holder if you want to go the cheap route.

The only thing with using random colored plastic they aren't going to be the exact color to correct for certain lighting conditions. Good luck

sounds good is that what you guys use? The one thing I really want to stay away from is adhesives on the flash maybe a clip on or rubberband type of setup will look into the gels and see which has the best offerings..thanks again

+1 on the sample kit, you could also get some velcro on put the soft part on the speed lite's head and attach the other ends on the samples to extend it and velcro it in place on the speed lite (Other the lamp of course.)

He sends to just about anywhere and I have bought from him on several occasions. With my gels I just cut out a section that covers my flash head, plus some long tabs on each side, then use an elastic band round the head to secure the gel. It need not be any more complicated than that!

For small speedlights like a 580 or 430, the Roscolux gels are perfect, and you can get a pack of about a hundred colors for just a few dollars. I think with shipping I paid about $ 10 total.

I've tried everything from tape, to velcro tabs, to elastic bands, to hard acrylic "L" shaped holders, and the best holders so far are the ones I got for free from another POTN member here. There's a waiting list for the free holders until he gives them all away, so you may want to check it out right away and get on the list.

I use honl speed strap and gels, good kit.

I just cut out a section that covers the head of the flash, but also leave tabs on each side so I can fit it onto the flash head with an elastic band. Simple but effective.

There are some neater but more complicated ways of achieving the same thing though!

He sent me the free gel holders a couple weeks ago too. I tried to pay him a few dollars, and he actually sent me my money back, saying that he just wanted to let people have them for free. How refreshing and cool is that? Since you asked how to attach the gels to your flash, I suggest you contact him to see if he has any left.
