Just out of curiosity, how many people will be buying camera's as gifts? and are the gifts a result of an interest by the person being gifted, or because we all love photography and want to share that interest, hoping they will find as much enjoyment out of it as most of us do? i wonder how many camera's are going to be opened and then left behind...lots of cash sitting in closets at that point.

I've already bought two, one for daughter and one for brothers girlfriend, both showing good interest in photography.

Bought two so far, got one more to go. Two are for my nieces, who are constantly pestering me to use my gear, and the other is for their mom. Her old S5 gave up a month or two ago, so she needs something too.

do they give suggestions of what they'd like, or are you using your own judgement in what you bought?

I kind of off-handedly mined for information like what size of camera they liked and that sort of thing, and with my nieces I watched what kind of shots they were taking with my stuff. Once I got that I just used my own judgment.

Not cameras, but certainly camera-related paraphenelia...

A camera for a brother's girlfriend? Seriously? Watch out so you don't over step your bounds getting her a better gift than your brother. When I think of camera, I think of $100 or more and that's a lot to spend the person a sibling it dating.

Check out the studio comparison photos on Dpreview.com for the s100 and that might make you want to find or keep an s95. Corner sharpness is notably worse on the s100 in their test photos.

sort of agree here, unless they are very serious and you know the level of interest.

i guess part of the driving force of my question is how many will get camera's that end up living in a closet. i know what i like to shoot and my abilities, but if i were to buy my sister an S100 for example, she would see it as a simple P&S and miss out on so much more. this is where i would be better off buying something much simpler which she could easily understand and use, even if it's once or twice a year.

Looking at buying a camera for my son, he'll be 5 soon and loves it... time will tell which model we get.

I have seen it, but there are still other features the S100 has that I think would be useful. If I find one locally and they have a S95 as well, I might buy both and return the one I don't like as much.

Not me, unless I stumble on a P&S camera I can take in the water (snorkel depth) that shoots RAW and doesn't need a housing to protect it from the water.

Dear POTN Members who want to buy someone a camera outside of their family,

I have been very good this year. I would like a 5d and 17-40. Or one or the other will be fine. No need to wrap and used will be fine. I will leave milk and cookies by the fireplace for you.

Thanks,
HD
