So what batteries does everyone like to use in thier speedlights ? I have been using Powerex 2700 but was wondering if there is a newer or better batteries on the market I have not heard of yet.

Powerex are good if you can charge them within a few days before use, or if you use them regularly. They self discharge a little though. I have 16 of them in my four flashes, and they work well, even after 2-3 years they're still near their theoretical capacity.

These days I only buy Eneloops (external link).

Either way, get a good charger, like the Maha C9000 (external link). That's why my batteries generally last a long time. Every 10th cycle or after a few months of not using them do a refresh cycle (it's in the manual). Brand new cells should go through a break in cycle, which can also help recover old cells.

Although there are better ones available now, I'm still rocking the Sanyo Eneloops and loving them. I have 16 and want more :P

No need to replace your Powerex 2700 for any other brands, including eneloop, unless you have an issue with having to charge the batteries before the shoot. I use Powerex 2700 for speedlites, because I get more flash pops and faster recycle time over longer duration. I use eneloop or alkaline, on the other hand, for things like PWII's, lightmeter, etc. since these require low self-discharging batteries. But I also don't hesitate to use eneloop for my speedlites, either, particularly if I'm using my external battery pack.

Howdy,

Funny, I just bought another 10 eneloop AA batteries from Costco yesterday :D. I bought my first 16pk ($38.55) through Amazon months ago and have used them in my flashes since then and have been very happy. An in-store Costco 10-pack (Item #595296) with two plastic battery cases is $20. The batteries are 3yr (75% retained charge) 1500x recharge cycles, 2000mAh with a minimum 1900mAh rating Sanyo unit part# HR-3UTGA. $2 each is a really good price as far as I'm concerned ;). The Maha chargers are very popular. I have the La Crosse BC700 charger and I like it too.

Lithium's cost almost as much as Eneloops so consider after two to three charges they more then paid for themselves.
