I have read this does not work with Canons St-e2? Is this true or did this one guy just have this problem?

Seems to be mixed to be honest, some have had success and other have not. I have the Yongnuo ST-E2 which works perfectly (as it should I guess lol) but have not personally tried with the Canon ST-E2.

Here's a comparison of both the Canon and Yongnuo ST-E2's:

Hey guys I was just wanting your opinion on using this flash as my first flash. Christmas is coming up and I was looking for a reasonable camera gift for someone to get me and I've been wanting a flash. So far I just have a body and kit lens but I think this flash will make the kit lens more usable and I will be getting a telephoto soon.

Basically I'm not sure what I need out of a flash yet as I've never used one, but I want one that will grow with me. I want to use it off camera sometime (which I assume I can do using a master or a cable with this one, right?) And I want ETTL. The only thing this is missing is HSS, right?

Would this be a wise investment over say the nifty fifty?

Thanks!

I would agree then that you'll get more out of a flash than you will from the nifty fifty. Even the kit lenses are sharp for most uses, the limiting factor is often just the aperture and when you have added light you don't always need F 1.8 anyway... If I could go back and change my order of upgrade, I would definitely do it this way.

You can use this for TTL either on camera or off camera using yongnuo ST-E2 or a canon flash as master (supposedly also the canon st-e2 but it doesn't work for me), and the cheaper way would be with a long TTL cord.

I can recommend this without much reservation but if you you don't think the off camera is important I would suggest getting the YN-468 instead and getting a different accessory with the savings. You'll be happy either way I think. Despite some of what you read online, yongnuo is fairly reliable. I have/previously had 6 of their flashes, no issues with any of them except for one I dropped 5 ft off a light stand and broke but that's a different story...

I have the nifty fifty and this flash, and the flash gives me greater freedom to do what I want inside. I've just had the kit lens on and have been messing around, and I'm getting some excellent shots, far better than the 50 cranked wide open in the low light. I've just dabbled with a few shots off the camera and will be playing with that a lot soon. Of course, the 50 has its place as well and is a worthy foray into primes.

Just realize that the flash is large and heavy. It will take some getting used to.

Sweet, thanks for the information guys. I figure I can use the flash with any lens so as long as it is reasonably sharp, I will be good for low light. Plus I feel like flash photography is something I want to start learning about so it will be a good, affordable introduction for me.'

Thanks again!

I too am keen on peoples thoughts on this cheap flash.. I am finally taking the plunge into flash photography but cant afford the higher end brand name flashes. I am unfortunately a Nikon user (D7000) and this flash appealed to me as it does basically every the SB700 does and half the cost...

Got my 565 yesterday, worked perfectly. Then like 1 hour later I decided to use it again and it didn't work. Everything, except the flash seem to work. Tried different batteries, still didn't work. Test flash with pilot, flashing on-camera or off-camera with RF-603's all won't work. It does beep but it doesn't flash.

Searched around and it's most likely because of a bad capacitor. The YN-460 and early 560's seem to have this problem.. haven't found anyone with a bad 565 yet.

Does anyone know how the capacitor looks like in the 560/565? Same as 460?
I've found several threads on repairing the 460/468 series but none on the 560 or 565.

I've had a 560 before and the zoomhead didn't wok so I've sent it back. Now my brand-new 565 doesn't work either.. shipping back takes ages so I'm thinking of replacing the capacitor with a better one like in the tutorials. Anyone got experience on replacing the capacitor on either a 560 or 565?

I've asked previously in regards to the dead capacitor, but no one seem to have any issues. So I ordered mine the other day, now someone comes up with a dead capacitor issue! I hope mine doesn't die...

I do not need HSS and it is of not much use anyway.

You must never shoot outdoors, at least not faster than f/22.
