I'm shooting a nativity play in a dark church. Up to what ISO on the 1D2 can I get usable shots w/o flash? I'll most probably use my 50mm as it has the 1.8 and I don't need the zoom as I can get up close.

been snapping now with this camera for some weeks, and think its still very capable light capturing device ISO1600 is very clean, and noise can easily be remedied with latest raw processors like ACR. big body stabilizes at low shutter speeds, with my normal lens (24-70), dont usually get much shake to photos at 1/30. f2.8 lens is usually enough for night shots in city without a tripod.

I shoot at ISO 3200 all the time for high school sports. They clean up incredibly well when done properly. But everyone is different and have different thoughts on this.

I was thinking of maybe getting a Mk ii but then read that anything over ISO 800 is going to be very noisy. That it is equally bad at higher ISO as the 40D. So I am a bit puzzled now about how you guys shoot at ISO 1600 or even ISO 3200 and have clean shots.
The reason I want to upgrade my 40D is because it doesn't do well at higher ISOs. I try to work around that by exposing to the right if possible and that helps a lot obviously, but still, if the Mk ii is not significantly better at it, then this camera is not right for me.

I found the Mk II (and IIn) to be about the same noise performance as the 40D that they replaced. They're no worse, but no better. AF performance of the IIn is better though so I'm getting better pics.

Noise - First rule is QUIT PIXEL PEEPING. Process, apply some NR then export to a 1200x1500 JPG and look at that on your screen. Don't zoom in, just look at it. Does it look clean enough? I bet it will.

Noise is not that big of a problem in final prints. I find the loss of color fidelity, loss of resolution and the changes in contrast to be far greater problems than noise.

What you find is what you find and not necessarily what I find. And please don't lecture me on noise. I know quite well how to prevent it and if it's there how to deal with it. I have a 40D, shoot at ISO400 most of the time, at ISO800 very often and am not afraid to shoot at ISO1600 or even higher and still end up with pretty decent shots with a level of noise that is very well manageable.
I would just like a camera that does a few stops better is all.
