I'm trying to buy the 70-200 2.8 IS ii from B&H but when I calculate shipping it's showing me a fee of 70 dollars for duties. i've ordered a lot from B&H and i've never had to pay duties on lenses and hardly ever for camera equipment. what gives? it's also asking 20 dollars for an avenger stand. i asked in the livechat if it was an error and he just told me to ask my government...

so i just tried ordering a 17-55 2.8 alone and it shows that there's no duties for that. why the difference?

edit: okay, strange. if i order the 1974 version there's a 70 dollars duty, but with the 2074 there's no duty. i'll try live chat again

edit: live chat was no help again. so i'll just order the more expensive one and then ask for a price match afterwards =/

It's likely the lens was classified (by B&H) with the wrong HTC (Harmonized Tariff Code).

I had two readers e-mail me about this same thing yesterday -- I forwarded on to Henry, who has been good at finding the right person to address these sorts of issues. :)
