Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) (external link) by Paolo Dolina (external link), on Flickr

The Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio), also known as the African Purple Swamphen, Purple Moorhen, Purple Gallinule, Pūkeko or Purple Coot, is a large bird in the family Rallidae (rails). From its name in French, talève sultane, it is also known as the Sultana Bird. This chicken-sized bird, with its huge feet, bright plumage and red bill and frontal shield is unmistakable in its native range. It should not be confused with the American Purple Gallinule, Porphyrio martinica.

Photo on one page, description and small pic on the other page...plus a few double spreads and you have 150 pages ...I'd say it would be a very fine book.

Growing old disgracefully!

Great shot pal! Wonderful lighting and feather detail. Love the colors in that bird.

Wandering Whistling Duck (Dendrocygna arcuata) (external link) by Paolo Dolina (external link), on Flickr

Formerly named Tree Ducks, the Wandering Whistling Duck have their new name because of their loud whistling calls and the whistling noise their wings make during flight.

They have long necks and legs and look like a cross between a goose and a duck. They have a strong head and neck with a darker crown and hindneck. The breast contains black spotting and the feathers are mostly dark brown.

They range in size from 54–60 cm in height and weigh on average 750 grams. They mainly feed on grasses, waterlillies, water plants and occasionally insects and aquatic vertebrae.

Habitat

The Wandering Whistling Duck lives in deep lagoons, flooded grasslands or dams. They enjoy the water and rarely leave the shore.

They can swim and dive with ease.

Breeding

Breeding occurs during the tropical wet season usually between December and May. During this time six to fifteen eggs are laid in a nest not far from water and usually in high grass or a sheltered area.

Great images Everyone.

Dolina, awesome work.
Dolina, didn't you have the 7D at one point?.. Just wondering, how you find the MK IV compared to the other cameras...? I know that the 800mm delivers. No questions asked.

Nighthound, did you take those Osprey shots in Florida..? They are absolutely fantastic. Great job.

Thanks!

Still have both 7D bodies. Both 1D4 and 7D are great but behave differently.

I reach for the bodies for differing reasons and situations.

Like say I need more AF points & ISO I go with the 1D4. I need more reach and lighter body I go with the 7D.
