Thought it time I made a contribution .
This is Mr 4 on Nov the 6th [his birthday] so we let off our fireworks a night late
after his birthday tea
I had taken several shots on the deck using some fill flash and the decided to try
with the flash off at f2.8, iso 320 , 1/40 sec @ 24mm and was pleasantly surprized
with the result. The focus was on the sparkler and a little bit of niose reducion and
sharpened up a bit.
I normally find photos in low light with the 1D a bit too grainy with is why I use my
speedlite a lot but every now and again it works out OK.

A couple of shots of my Road Worn Telecaster Relic Geetar, shot with a Canon 28-105 and an old sunpak flash.
Forgive the messy background... : (

I'd like to request some sample images. I am the proud owner of a 1D and I am in the market for a new lens. I would really like for you guys to post images you've taken with the 1D and the lenses I am interested in. Also let me know what you think about the lens-body combo and which would perform the best on a 1D.

The lenses I am interested in are:

70-200mm f4L non-IS
200mm f2.8L II
80-200mm f2.8L
300mm f4L non-IS
Sigma and Tamron 70-200mm f2.8's

Thanks in advance,

Benjamin

Honestly, all of those lenses will out-resolve the 4mp sensor in the 1D, so you don't need to worry about sharpness. I would think they all provide nice colors and contrast. Basically, they will all work well.

Get whichever one fits your budget best and focuses best. I'd probably skip the Tamron because it is the only one of the bunch that has a noisy and slower focusing motor.

If you're looking for a really cheap option, Sigma used to make a 70-210 f/2.8 APO lens that doesn't work on newer digital cameras, but does work on the 1D classic. (it allows you to stop down with the 1D but only shoots wide open on the newer bodies) I've seen them go very cheap on ebay.

That being said, here are a couple zoo snapshots I took with a 1D and a 200 f/2.8 II.

I own the 300 f4L Non-IS, as a Motorcycle Racing Photography enthusiast it is certainly the Telephoto lens I use the most, possibly the Lens I take most Photo's with using my 1D full stop. I am extremely happy with the Lens. It works very well with the 1.4X Extender to make a 420mm f5.6, It will also work with the 2X extender on the 1Series Bodies, though repotedly the results are not as good.

I have posted my best Photo's which were taken with the 1Dc & 300 F4L, also some using the 1.4X Extender, on POTN previously. I don't like to re-post the same Photo's, so I will look for some I haven't posted before & will post them later.

Telephoto's in the 300mm+ category are best used with a Monopod, I use a Manfrotto 679 with 234RC Head, which I would also highly recommend.

Here is a 300f4L non-IS & 1Dc Photo I know I haven't posted before as I prefer "panned" shots but occasionally take a few "freeze" Shots.

This was taken at f5.6 (the 300f4L's optimium Aperture for IQ), 1/1600sec at 200ASA.

The 300 f4L is a fantastic Lens, but I would suggest you think about what you like to Photograph before buying one.

If your sig is up to date, I notice that you don't own any Lens longer than 80mm. This may make the versatility of a 70-200 L (f2.8 or f4) a higher priority. For fixed focal Lengths, the 200 f2.8 you also mentioned is also worth considering. Note though that while it's performance solo is excellent, its performance with an Extender is quite compromized according to reviews I have just checked so a 200 & 1.4X is no substitute for a 300.

For my Photographic interest of Motorcycle Racing, my 300 is excellent, especially as it performs well with the 1.4X when I need more reach. I rarely use my 70-210 which is why I haven't upgraded to a 70-200 L.

If like mine, your Photography is far more suited to a 300 than a 70-200, the 300 f4L is a great buy!

I think I have narrowed it down to the 200 2.8L or the 80-200mm 2.8. I feel like that covers the majority of my needs.
