I'll monitor this thread too. I'm planning on driving to LD14 from Toledo, OH. So this is going to be a weekend trip. I presume it'll be in January or maybe February. I have to research accommodations, parking etc. I'm sure it's been discussed here before :)

Yes, a little below average now which is upper 30's/mid 20's. Today, it's 10:30 and just now up to 30 on way to 33. Fri talking a hi of 28, so we're heading in the "right" direction. Sunny for a change today so going down to Il. R. & practice on some gulls. Who knows, might spot a baldie there(Hope springs eternal).

Rog - I saw 2 yesterday & 3 on Monday along Riverbeach drive where it meets Hwy 29.

Gabe, just look at the first post to get some info on accomodations. Parking is free in the open lot right where you will be shooting.

The Holiday Inn Express has worked for my wife and me. You're 10 minutes or less away from L&D 14. As stated already parking is free and unless there is a special function going on at the site you won't have a problem. The crowds (and eagles) ar very accomodating.

There was 1 @ Pekin, across the river and out of reach of my 500, but if nothing else, I can say I didn't get "skunked" this winter. Gulls were sitting pretty tight, so didn't get a lot of practice.

The issue I see, though, is a warm-up coming for mid month. Next Thursday looks to be 50+ down here. After that weekend, we should cool back down and possibly get a little of the white stuff. Can't speak for up there, but that's what things look like a few hundred miles south.....as the baldies fly.

Is this a trip you can do in a weekend. I live in Michigan near flint. I would love to make the trip out.

I made the trip about 2 years ago. I came from the west side of the state but we left at 5:00 pm and got there by 10:30-11:00. We also stopped. Remember, on the way out, you loose an hour in time due to time zone so we got to our hotel, dropped in bed, and then were decently rested and ready for the morning. We spent all day there on the Saturday and found that we got our best shots in the afternoon. I got some great shots in the morning as well but with a bit of timing. It was worth our trip. We are considering another trip this year.

I started this weatherman thing-guess I better continue: COLD here today and tomorrow, hi in upper 20's and talking single digit low for tonite. But like chopper said, warm-up forcast peaking @ upper 40's by next Thurs. Then immediately back to low 30's hi and low 20's lows. thru next weekend. As someone used to say, there's your "Hippy-Dippy Weatherman" report. (Geo. Carlin, right?)

Chopper,

back in 2008 (last time i made the day trip) I lost count after 35+ birds at the "Two Rivers Marina" on the Illinois side of Hwy 54, up by Louisiana, Mo. I parked along side the road just brfore the bridge before coming back to the Missouri side and was able to get some good shots. Sorry I have no proof, computer crashed in 2010 and lost all my files.

The 2-3 times i've been to Clarksville i haven't seen too many around, hopefully someone with more experience and/or more local has some better insite than me.

Chopper:

I think you will get the best results with a 300, 400 or 500 (assuming a crop body like the 7D)
A 600 will be too long at L&D 14. You would spend most of your time just trying to acquire your target at that focal length. I was really happy last year using a 400 5.6 in good light. One of my friends rented a 300 2.8 and used it with and without a 1.4 TC and was very happy with his results. The only time you could use a 70-200 would be when they fly directly overhead, and then you can get a shot like this:

IMAGE: http://stoph.smugmug.com/Other/Bald-Eagles/eagles-1-of-2/1151990216_R48eB-XL.jpg
And this shot from post #1 kind of shows you how close an eagle might fly when you are standing along the river:
