I've found that no matter where you go, if you have an opinion, it's going to eventually run counter to someone else's opinion. Sometime those can be fairly calm, stimulating discussions. But there are those who can't deal with having their closely held opinion questioned, and that's when things get heated. It doesn't matter that both parties may be correct in their ideas, only that they are unable to hold an intelligent and measured discussion on the topic.

The obvious culprits are politics and religion, but I've seen a little of it in photography discussions, and it can get quite bad on golf forums. I've see it most often when the moderating team is either AWOL or simply doesn't care - the old "give 'em and inch and they'll take a mile" syndrome. When certain members realize that there is no penalty for inappropriate acts, then they make no effort to curb their baser instincts. Such forums aren't much fun for anyone actually seeking assistance or information.

Thankfully POTN isn't one such forum. The folks here tend to be friendly and helpful, and it shows in the sheer volume of activity on the site. I don't think I've yet seen any new member driven off by rude or belligerent behavior. The membership seems for the most part to be intelligent, well spoken, and eager to assist those of us who are relative newcomers to digital photography. This is a pleasant place to hang out. :D

That is absolutely true. That is why it I was stunned when I realized people can see how you judged against them. There is no way this can create a healthy community. People form alliances, remember what you did to them, etc. That is human nature. I asked about their policy regarding this and I just got a welcome to DA message in the public forums. Then I got a PM telling me

"The problem is that the site had gone to the dogs recently and we see mountains of crap and very little good stuff. I've all but stopped submitting pictures myself".

Then the person went on to say many moved to another site. It is also free so there is something going on. I pulled all my images today. Ever since my favourite online photo contest went under I have looking for a replacement.

Well this is the place.

I've found POTN the nicest on the net, the UK talk photography forums are something else.
