Please recognize that the 5d2 came out back in 2008. It's based off of 40d/50d interface. I too find the use a bit kludgy when switching from 7D. But I don't think it would deter me from taking good pix with it. I did have a 30d for many years.

Right, but that's an arbitrary thing. In essence, the button layout is different and the AF is different. Software and interface - they're almost identical. They do feel different and I think the 7D has improved ergonomics. Its live view / video recording is an improvement. I think the sensation of speed has more to do with the AF system that anything else. In terms of menu and software response times, I think they're both exactly the same.

I wonder what would happen if you handed the cameras to someone who didn't know anything about them and had them guess which was newer. And then show them a sample image printed at 40x60 at ISO 1600 and have them pick one they would like to take home.

I read this whole thread, just for the record.

I came from a 5D MARK II to a 60D myself. I can say with out a doubt, from the very first picture I took with the 60D. The photos will never compare to a 5D II vs a 60D. Yes it is true the ergonomics and AF of the 60D's body are better. But in the end, the image quality is all that matters. I really hope this MARK III has at least the 60D's AF at least.

I don't drive a Expensive Car nor could I afford one. I drive a 2001 Honda Civic LX with less than 50K miles on it. It's paid off though! LOL

...I am seeing a lot of people that are upgrading very quickly here at POTN. It seems like this forum feeds this desire to upgrade just for upgrading sake. Reasons not important... just upgrade.

...you buy a piece of equipment, learn to use it, discover what you can and can not acheive, and then determine if you really need to upgrade....

So true.

Your wish has been granted. Wait a couple more months and the 1DX will be out. Probably not the price you were thinking, the but it is the. Amera you wished for! ;)

No. I don't want the bulk and weight of a 1D camera. Give me the 5D size anyday.

But if you had to pick one that did more than the others, it would be the 7D.

The 5D2 seriously limits your creativity and ability to capture all kinds of shots.

Really. I do just fine with my 5D. Changing the "your" to "my" in your statement would make it more accurate.

Dredging up the past? Yeah, well that whole thread got way off track. People seem to have a tendency to skim and post as fast as possible. Ever notice how many threads with rules (like image posting and stuff) are just angry people restating the rules for the millionth time? Yeah...people don't actually read.

just have one of those "Remember Everything" memories.
I read 'em. I'm quirked by people that respond to a question when they obviously have not read it.

No kidding. Without being mean, its one of the top 3 silliest things I've ever read on these boards. If you listen closely, you can hear hundreds of thousands of professional photographers furiously listing their creatively restrictive and ability inhibiting 5Dm2s on eBay and local craigslists...

You would be able to see it, but unfortunately my imagination exists in very low light and I only have a 7D to capture it...

I still stand by everything that I said in that post, if not the way I went about saying it. A lot of the problem was that people were posting their opinions (which is great) without actually reading the thread. Annoying.

I was going to get a 5D2 soon but I am holding off for the mk 3. The info I have seen is showing that it will not have the 7D AF system but for some reason a lessor version of it, and 30mp res which I dont care about since 18mp will do just fine for what I want. I am not looking to get massive prints, but a lot of buyers will. I have not seen any info on sensor ability but for the fact that it will have better ISO performance. I was thinking they would put a slightly better AF in it than the 7D. Who knows since they have not even given an official press release since they do not wnat to steal attention away from the 1Dx. I read on canon rumors that they may not make any statement regarding the 5d3 until after march. So I would feel kind of foolish buying a 5D2 right now if the new version is going to be out in 6 months. At that point people will be dumping the 5D2's like crazy and the used market will be flooded with them and the prices will drop.

Can all of you imagine what this thread would have been like if I would have said that I prefer my old Nikon d40 to the 5d2?

Discuss amongst yourselves.

I just got my new 5d2 and 24-105mm kit in the mail yesterday. I got it to replace the 60D I have been shooting w/ for a while.

First impressions: I miss my 60D.

The 5d2 does not feel as good in the hand as my 60D. It also feels like im using an "old" camera. The button layout on the 60D seems intuitive and perfect to me. It may just be that Im used to the 60D at this point, so hopefully time will cure this.

I miss the screen of the 60D. Not so much the articulating aspect, but the actual screen. I do not know the resolution of each, but the 60D seems noticably sharper to me. I use this pretty often to make sure I got the shot, especially when Im shooting a very narrow DoF.

Focusing on the 5d2 seems painfully slow. Using my canon 24-70mm, my 60d seems to focus considerably faster.

Now here's the kicker and where I'll get laughed off of this forum...I've yet to compare the cameras picture to picture :D If the 5d2 gives me what I think are better shots, I think I can overlook everything above. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to give it a good workout and do some good comparisons. After that, I'll finally get the 24-105mm lens out of the box and probably have buyer's remorse over my 24-70mm =)

Anyone else find it hard to move to a 5d?

It's a Saturday; you're anxious to go outside and take some photos. Which camera will add or distract from that enjoyment, the 5D2 or the 60D? Ergonomics, as you noted with your "blisters" analogy, is not a trivial matter, and both cameras are capable of taking exceptional photos.

This said, are the 5D's stated barriers insurmountable, such as unacceptable weight, or is it just a matter of getting acclimated to the feel and function of a new camera?

If the 5D2 continues to feel awkward, are you willing to deal with such sacrifice based on improved image quality (albeit with slower focus), or are you happy enough with the 60D's images?

Pristine image quality is not the goal for everyone, lest we're promoting homogeneity. What's your gut feeling?

No one knows when the 5Dm3 will be out. No one. No one knows the specs. If you have the funds and need a camera, then why wouldn't you?

Me? I need a new computer, but I'm waiting for that new iOS touch screen iMac - heard its coming out in 2019. Can't wait! You can ask it for unicorns and they just pop out! And the unicorns poop iPhones!

Seriously, the 5Dm2 is so capable. I can't imagine really needing more from a camera right now.

This pretty much sums up the questions I am going through in my head, and I probably won't have an answer for a month. By no means are my initial impressions enough for me to box up the 5d2 and be done with it. I definitely plan on giving it some tender loving and then decide which way to go. Im really looking forward to heading out w/ a friend this Saturday and doing as much shooting as possible w/ the 5d2.
