I have my first non-family (real client) portrait session Monday at 5 o'clock... Any tips?

They lady is in a wheelchair; so I don't know if they will be keen on wardrobe changes... I may just have to make the best of whatever they wear.

If they are against wardrobe changes; I'm going to request they wear solid colors to avoid them showing up in grandma's hideous knitted Christmas sweater.

We are shooting outdoors through the goldten-hour; they have asked if they should bring anything.

This is my first portrait session for a real client and I am a tad nervous... Any tips/help is greatly appreciated.

----

I plan on shooting with one speedlight through a white umbrella, using the sun as a hairlight/backlight. Will have a second speedlight/stand with me just in case I can't find a suitable background allowing me to use the sun like I want.

5pm EST. Better shoot fast, it's dark here (NE Ohio) by about 5:15 now and you are EAST of me! I'd also ask the family if they would like to swap out the wheelchair for another chair for the lady. Might be a nice touch.

On the other hand, one who uses a wheelchair knows she uses a wheel chair. It's like of like cloning out braces on a kid who wears braces. Everyone KNOWS you have braces. It is what it is. Maybe the family feels the same way about the wheelchair, but I'd offer an alternative as a courtesy to the family if it were me.

Since you don't say what type of portrait session. You my ask her what she is looking for. If it is just some nice shots, ask her to bring a couple of things she feels are important to her.

Also have a couple of nice fresh flowers - they can be held, looked at etc and can add a nice touch to a portrait.

Good luck!

They were the couple's Christmas portraits, but they showed up 35 minutes late and I had zero twilight to work with.

This is what we ended up with after a 30 minute session in the dark. I played hell getting focus but managed to get a couple keepers... C&C welcomed...

Windy conditions rendered my umbrella unusable... So I was stuck using unmodified speedlights.

I was going to suggest that you set this appointment for about 45 minutes earlier, to be sure to get the best light, but then realized that you were probably there when I was about to make my post last night. With them appearing late for the shoot they made it difficult with the lighting situation. However, I think you made some good shots that probably made them well satisfied.

Were these taken at the State building?

Yeah, I wasn't happy at all about them showing up late... but decided to suck it up and try to make the best of it.

Yep, they were taken at/around the Christmas tree in front of the statehouse.

Well, you ended up with some very good shots that should have pleasing to them, ... so, great job!
