Admiring your work, though I just have the TS-E 17, not the 24. BUT...regarding tripod heads...on the advice from a fellow traveller in the TS-E 17 thread I bought the Manfrotto 410 junior, and couldn't live without it now.

For precise setting up most ball heads are very tricky....the geared head is so contollable. The only annoyance with it is the QR plate...it's a bit cumbersome. But what the heck, it's worth it.

Any advice on a particular tripod for a geared column?

Thanks Ricardo - yes worked it down to the 410 and then spied the 405 - so have acquired that - somewhat bigger to carry about but love the gears and the large controls, but need to carry my glasses! :o , overall the setup for me now is actually quicker than using the ball head. The 17mm would be great on a crop body.

I also have had the RC4 plates for years back with the Maymia kit so I am use to the plate system, actually acquired all that from Film facilities in AKL - loooong time ago so not sure if they are still around.

@Frederick - love the B&W - did you use any tilt with this? I am trying to get my head around it - AA - The Camera book is not helping my head either :)

I used 2,5 degrees tilt to make everything appear in focus. It is also shifted so the mountain would not look crooked

I need a tripod setup for TS-E 24mm.

Note:
I posted this in the TS-E 24mm thread, because this is where the people with TS experience hang out.

Back ground:
I'm just getting back into photography...had a Nikon FM2 back in the early to mid 80s, then did a little astrophotography in the late 90s.

Now: I just acquired the following.
1) 5D MK ii, with 24-105mm lens.
2) I'm taking an "Introduction to digital photography" class here at university.
3) I will be ordering the TS-E 24mm on Monday.

Needed: (Primarily to get the best out of the TS-24, I may add a 100-400 IS later.)
1) Good tripod (Gitzo GT3541LS, or other?) (Most of my shooting will be outside to start with, so I need/prefer small, lightweight, and rock-solid.)
2) Ballhead, or GearDriveHead
3) Quick Release Clamp
4) Other...I'm sure I forgot something.

Any help in putting together a good combo of parts will be greatly appreciated. I am interested in quality parts not cheap ones. (I already have a micky mouse tripod from Walmart.)

Thanks,
Jim

I'm using a 3541LS with Arca Swiss C1 and a Really Right Stuff L-Bracket.
The Head is perfect for precise Framing and Straight Verticals, not build for point and shoot action like a Ballhead could do. The C1 slows you down, lets you think about your Framing and delivers stunning results, always!

If you want something more versatile, the Arca Swiss D4 is for sure worth a look!

Ahh, and don't forget to think about a nice Bag for Transportation!
Think Tank Big Bazooka, mounted on the side of a Airport International 2.0 was my Choice... Happy Happy Happy!:D

Thanks Mike,

The Arca Swiss C1 does appear to be the Cadillac, of the gear-heads. After playing around in astrophotography, I can appreciate a rock solid, and precisely controllable, mounting head.

After reading about the differences between the 3541L and 3541LS, it looks like the LS is the best choice for me.

Thanks for giving me concise and thoughtful information. It was easy to research, and conclude, that these produces are what I was looking for.

Thanks again,
Jim

Had a bad case of Julian-itis. Only relief was to get this lens. Note I said relief--it doesn't cure it! Shot this during lunch no tilt or shift was applied.
