I have a 550D and was today sold a Metz 44 AF-1 flash gun, was told by the salesman that this gun would work as an off the camera slave without the need for a flash unit on the camera's hot shoe.

I have tried and tried to get it to flash remotely but it just refuses.
I have checked on the internet and found that the gun does not require a master flash on the camera to activate it.

Can anyone tell me for sure if this setup should work or not.

Thanks.

Sorry to tell you this but the 550D does not have wireless master capabilities. It cannot trigger any flash wirelessly. I believe only the 7D and 60D has that feature.

I just looked at the specs for Metz 44 as well. There's no mention of optical trigger so I'm afraid that the flash and camera body will not work together wirelessly. You'd need to attach a 580ex I/II or wireless ETTL transceivers for them to work together.

Thats one of the reasons that my wife now has my 550D and I have the 7D. If you want to try activating a remote flash from firing the on camera flash you need to get a SYK3 remote trigger or something similar and try it from there.

I have a question, i got the 60D would this flash work as a master, just as Meercat asks? Or do i need a thirdparty ir remote on hotshoe and flash?
