Alien Bee B800 x 4. I don't quite have the skin tones dialed in yet for this gym. Most shots are 1/250 sec, f/4.0, ISO 400.

Wow. Tis is what I want t ultimately do. I own my own business that is successful and I'd love to do this on the side for fun and justify my photo purchases by making a little money to keep it going. I'd love to strobe my local high schools gym. One because it's super dark, two because m there every game anyhow. Nice again.

Strobes in the ceiling... not fair!!! :-)

I am actually trying to get my two contact schools to sign long term and I will do this also... until then, super clamps and 13' light stands for me.

Ah, Mark, a pleasure to meet you.....sitting on the floor with your f/2.8, 70-200mm, and your new 1D MkIV I presume. But with Phil taking up the entire balcony, where are your strobes?

Do you ever get complaints from coaches/players? Reason I asked is because we have had opposing coaches complain every now and then about the flash. Sometimes we are forced to not use them. Our flashes are set on the mezzanines.

His strobes are mounted on the rail. Not in the ceiling.

Do you ever get complaints from coaches/players? Reason I asked is because we have had opposing coaches complain every now and then about the flash. Sometimes we are forced to not use them. Our flashes are set on the mezzanines.

I've been using two AB800's for three years shooting high school volleyball, basketball, swimming and some DIII basketball. 95% of the time the flash is bounced off the ceiling, or maybe even wall/ceiling. 5% of the time because of certain reasons, the lighting has been direct from the far corners of the gym or fieldhouse. Twice I had a complaint. Once, while shooting a DIII women's game, a fan that was waiting for the following men's game, was irate, "Are those your lights?!! They're giving me a migraine!!! (There were three minutes left in the women's game.) I asked if he could hold on until the end of the game? He said, "Yes." One of the problems there was, a few minutes before, I had let a photog use one of my PWII's to try out on his camera, so there was basically x2 the frequency of strobes going off. The other complaint came from a volleyball official in the 5th game of the match. The score at the time was about 9-6. He asked me to turn them off. He said, "I can't make the call, because I can't see." (Of course, in all professionalism, I bit my tongue.....[according to both rival coaches, he was calling a terrible contest].....that is, I did not reply, "You haven't been able to see the entire match.") So I shot ambient for the remainder of the game. The local newspaper photogs are great shooters. The one shooting that match was also shooting direct light, but was not asked to turn off her AB800's. :)

He is cheating. Who needs stinking strobes! ;)

Don't tell Phil but actually you can't beat strobed shots in my opinion.

Hope Phil doesn't mind but here are a couple of my ambient. Still trying to get things dialed in and trying to learn LR3. I am loving the step up from the 1D MKII. I also upgraded to the V2 of the 70-200 2.8 and UPS delivered a new 16-35 2.8 today. To many good deals on new lenses this time of year.
