Did a small HDR test since a while, let me know what you think

Anyone with a 1D4 using this lens? I'm looking for an UW for it.

Only question for you is what does it do in a 1.3 crop. Look above for the 1DMKII and III shots to get a feel.

I you're serious, be sure you know why you're getting this lens over a WA prime.

I guess more than anything I'm having a hard time finding a WA that I like. I had the 17-40L on my 5D2 before I got my new 1D4 this week. I'm not a huge 17-40 fan. Not that it's bad glass, just don't love it. I'm open to suggestions, but I do need something wider than the 24-70 2.8L that I have already for my spring storm chasing season. The 24-70 was fine on the FF sensor of my 5D2, but obviously the 1.3 crop changes things.

In retrospect, because of barrel distortion and soft corners, I would have opted for a prime in the 18-21 MM range, even if it was MF. Or, quite possibly, the 17 TS-E.

As for storms -- some of my best lightning work was done with the 15MM fisheye.

So, perhaps the new 8-15 f/4 L fish is for you?

I see the TS-E and fish at the extremes, and with those I know what I am after in advance, so I get it.

What appears to unsettle me is the compromises in between -- whether the lens on this thread, a 14MM prime, or anything else which distorts 'between' the known of the fish or TS-E.

That said, I'm not going to sell my 16-35 II -- Horses for courses, and one of my needs is a WA my wife and relatives can operate whenever we're in Yellowstone, etc. plus the pick-it-up-shoot-fast-or-else situations.

This is actually an issue I face. I don't see a MF in my future because the wife wouldn't be able to do just what you mentioned.

The new fish is cool, but maybe not exactly what I'm after. This is a tough one. It was a tough choice to switch to the 1DIV from my 5D2 as well. I love the FF, but love the AF system of the 1D4 more. Ideally, the 1DX may have been the best of both worlds, but it's not in my budget currently. So this brings me back to finding a good lens that is wide enough for both landscapes and stormscapes but maybe not a MF or fish..

Thanks for the input. Being able to talk out decisions like these are invaluable.

Here's what that big snow storm did to New Mexico a few days ago. Beautiful pure white snow on flat desert plains as far as you could see. It looked like it covered the entire state.
