Great Lens! Nice for the holidays.

Are you putting a "protective" filter on it? What kind?

Welcome to the club. I've had mine a couple of months when I got it with my 5D2 and its a stunner. Great lens, ideal length for a walkabout and excellent IQ. What body are you going to put it on. I use mine between the 5D2 and my 7D and its great on both. A case of when its not on one its on the other really.

I'd say put the lens hood on and don't block that expensive glass with a $70 "filter."

Thanks for reaffirming my decision. I'll be using it on my 7D. No filters on. I chose it over the 17-55 because of build quality and a possible full-frame upgrade in the near future (read: next year).

Funnily enough I am looking to purchase this lens again as I think it's an awesome lens for its range, its build and its verstility. I sold this lens on a year or so ago and "upgraded" - however I am now moving back to fewer lenses with more versatility and letting my photos do the work.
I think the 24-105 and 17-40 are going to be my workhorses.

Congrats on the lens - its a lovely piece of kit. Great images on either a crop or a FF body.

What else were you considering and what made you buy this one?

I'm trying to decide for myself.
