If it is focusing behind the screen you most likely need a shim from Canon.

denat wrote in post #13171978 (external link)
Just installed the catz eye split prism focusing screen which I bought specifically for use with this lens. Unfortunately, because of the focus shift I still need to compensate and focus slightly behind the target area. That is to say, the two halves of the split circle are not entirely lined up when it is in focus. The bottom half is just bit off to the left.

That does not seem to be an issue when the lens is stopped down to f5+. Also at that aperature the focus confirmation light goes on as the screen comes into focus.

In case you are wondering if I installed the screen properly I did test it on a slower lens and did not have this issue.

This is one tricky lens. But then again I always knew that it's not great stopped down or for close subjects.

Does the split screen help? Yes. Once you get the feel for it is definitely more accurate than bracketing focus back and forth and waiting for that focus confirmation light to go on.

I've owned this lens for a couple of years now. I mainly use it as a my primary landscape and walk around lens while traveling. Recently i've been wondering if i should upgrade to the MP version of this lens for its added flexibility. But i do love the edge to edge sharpness and contrast from this lens.

Sharing some sample images from thereview of this lens (external link)i did on my website. Do take a look at the samples and let me know if they are typical for this lens.

I'm considering this lens over the Canon EF 50mm 1.4 - Can anyone relate to the two and shed some light on performance?

I have used the Canon and never liked the look that much. It never seemed very special. The Zeiss is really something else but it is not a lens for you if you want everything perfect at every f-stop. At 3.5 or better it is rock solid wider than that you can't just pick it up and shoot whatever you want. You have to learn to use it's advantages. This is really an old school lens and you have to learn to use it correctly. Once you do I think you will find it can be very rewarding. To me in the 1.4-2.8 range especially in B&W it looks more like film than either my 35 2.0 or 100 2.0.

If you want rock solid across the board go with the MP50 instead.

I would defiantly pass on the 50 1.4 Canon if it was me. But I will warn you like I have others, once you go Zeiss and learn them it is very hard to use other lenses again.

Plus the added bonus of manual focus it makes me feel like a photographer again and not a snap shooter. IMO anyway.

Hope that helps.

P.S. If you want to talk about comparing take a few hours and look at all the Zeiss lens forum pictures with all the different lenses and then after you have looked at them for a while go back and look at the Canon lens forums. IMO that will be pretty much all it takes to see the difference.

There are some spectacular examples in this thread. I just got the lens yesterday and am really loving it so far. It is super sharp! It was raining most of the day so I couldn't test it out as much as I wanted to..
