Great shots, even under good lighting conditions.. :)
Did you heavily process them?

Regarding mirror lens, how do mirror lens lose out compared to the normal lens?

I had the Tokina when I was shooting Pentax and I found it to be a great lens. It did hunt a little bit in low light but my Pentax cams weren't known for their speedy AF anyway. It would also bang when it hit the ends of focusing.

I found it to be acceptably sharp at f/5.6 and more the acceptable at f/6.7.

One important thing.. there are a few different Tokina's out there. Make sure you get the latest AT-X version.

Here are some sample shots (again, taken with a Pentax K10d/K20d) all handheld.

Pentax K10D ,Tokina 400mm f/5.6 AT-X

Pentax K20D ,Tokina 400mm f/5.6 AT-X
1/500s f/6.3 at 400.0mm iso640

Here is the normal shot (pretty heavy crop actually)
Pentax K10D ,Tokina 400mm f/5.6 AT-X

and a 100% crop, unedited of the above

Nice pics.... a little shameless plug, I just posted my Tokina 80-400mm for sale on the for sale section. Its not a L, not even close, but it is a serviceable lens for a minimal investment.

Not heavily... My usual PP just includes a smart sharpen after I resize. Other then that it is mostly levels ect.

Mirror lenses are fixed aperture so there is no control of DOF or adjusting for changing light (at least the ones I know of). Also they tend to have donut shaped artifacts in the bokeh and of course the ones I know of are manual focus.

The advantage of course is that they are cheap and light so the are easier to handhold. Although that Tokina is very compact and light for a 400mm lens (smaller and lighter then the Canon 400 f/5.6L).

Ah thanks, so i would say other than the fixed aperature, the IQ shouldnt be too bad right? I suspect with a fixed aperature, I am unable to stop down to attain the sharpness that I want.

Is there any recommendable mirror lens?

By the way, in this case, samyang lens is only good for uwa?

Thanks

I've never used a mirror lens myself but the other thing I've read is that the contrast on them leaves something to be desired.. so I imagine they require a bit more processing.

I have no idea about sharpness ect. You might want to browse someplace like pbase to get examples of different lenses.

i have the tamron 500mm f8 mirror...it's a decent lens...as i said, it depends on what your uses are...if it's mainly moon shots, then it'll work out great, as the moon's not going anywhere :)...the lack of AF is a killer, and the donut shaped bokeh isn't that pleasing...it is possible to get good shots...search for poor mans 500mm, to see a bunch
edit: here it is:
https://photography-on-the.net …hlight=poor+man%27s+500mm

here's my comparison to my sigma 150-500OS with the tamron

I didn't see them mentioned but the sigma 135-400 or 170-500 are in the $450 range. Not great but maybe a place to start.
