I traded my 100-400mm a few months ago for a 400mm 5.6 and was finally able to take it for a quickie shoot this afternoon. So, for so good and there was only one time where I wanted to pull back the lens but otherwise I'm pretty happy with the AF, IQ, and overall feel of the lens.

I'm looking forward to getting some time behind the camera this week with the incoming swell. Feedback and comments are always welcome.

Nice action! I love shooting with my 400/5.6. Where are you shooting in SD this week? I might hit up Windandsea on Friday morning for spot check. I'm not gonna paddle out in 14ft surf, so I might as well shoot it. :)

14ft.

Damn, I have been shooting waist to chest:lol:

I love that second Pic, really nice mood and all. Great shot.

I just started shooting surfing yesterday, I had some exposure F'ups with sunlight and clouds and reflection the first day I tried and then today I did better. I had to do more PP than I like to save them but overall I am pretty stoked to get into it. How do you guys shoot surfing generally as a go to? Av/Tv/M?????? If you have the time I posted pics on the "2 surf pics" thread, any critique would be much appreciated.

AV if everything falls in place, otherwise M.
Typically ss's greater than 1/1000th, iso as low as possible (based on histogram) & fstop between f8-f16.
Center point focus, AWB/RAW.

Thanks, I shot in av, but didn't stop it down as much. Mostly 5.6 and then 7.1 on a constant max f4 lens. I had a ss between like 2000-4000 which was fine and I tried to keep the ISO at 200 but went to 400 if my ss went below 1500 or so. One spot I was a bit far out and even at 300 I found myself cropping more than I would have liked trying to get the action as large as possible, but I probably over cropped some as well thinking too much about the subject instead of the overall pic. I hate pp and I suck at it.

Unfortunately, the morning is booked but the afternoon looks good and will probably shoot at Horseshoes or the Cove. I packed my board and will try to get a quickie afternoon surf while the surf is still manageable.

I got a session in yesterday and got worked at the beach breaks. I packed the board up after and picked up the camera for some sunset session shots. I'll have to get those posted soon.

Looking forward to seeing some shots from today, I went down to the cove, a quick check at swamis and a peak at tamaracks. I saw some big breaks but nothing over 12ft. I've been spoiled going up to the Wedge when its pumping. My 70-200mm wasnt enough reach, so I packed it up early. I jope others had better luck

I love seeing San Diego surfing shots!

They had to close the OB Pier today because of the high surf. I don't think that's happened for, I dunno', 12 or 13 years.

I'm heading out to La Jolla Cove or Windansea tomorrow morning. I figure either those or Sunset Cliffs would be good places to go.

Any thoughts on San Onofre?

I got some good shots from Bird Rock this morning, but my computer is acting up, so I probably won't get to them till tomorrow. I'll probably try to paddle out tomorrow if it's smaller and cleaner. Today's morning session looked big, but pretty messy.

I heard about the OB Pier closure and was thinking about heading over there for some shots, but traffic to that area was just bad all day.

I heard Horseshoes was insane this morning but the conditions were a little shaky with the super high tide in the morning. Plenty of size tomorrow and offshore conditions should make it super fun. I heard some guy had to be helivac'd somewhere between Henneman's and PB Point so be safe out there.
