First off, I want to thank everyone here for all the sharing and comments. I have learned alot here, and it is a daily visit for me. I am not one to generally post, but know that I do appreciate it.

Anyway, to my story. In February 2010 I bought a Canon 7D from Best Buy along with their Black Tie Protection plan. I got it for a great deal at the time, and I always wonder if I should get those protection plans. Well twords the end of summer last year, after the one year warranty was up, I started having issues. When shooting in AV or TV my shutter speed would lock at 8000, and / or the light meter would underexpose by a good 2 stops.

While I could compensate with exposure compensation or shoot in Manual which is what I did as a work around, for a newer camera, I wanted it to work right. So I brought it into the geek squad, they sent it out, and I get in back in a week with the description of shutter repair and adjustments. Came back a week later, seemed to be fine. A week or so later, acted up again, so sent it back with printed proof of the issue, they sent it out again, came back a week later with more "adjustments" and again seemed fine, but I went through a shooting drought. During Christmas, it happened again, I contacted the geeks, and they told me to bring in the body for a no lemon exchange.

I go in, drop it off, I was told as it was the third time, they had to send it back, have it looked at and get the replacement "approved" this past Wed. I get a call I got the approval and to come into the store. Walked in expecting a refurbished body or something, nope, went to the camera dept, got a brand new in box 7D kit, no cost, but my extended warranty was then "used up" Now I only brought in the body for repairs, so all said and done, I get a new camera, an extra kit lens, and another spare battery and charger.

I don't think I am going to get another extended warranty on this one right now tho, as I don't have the fundage for it, but I can say I am more than pleased with the service I got :-)

Thanks for reading, and please keep sharing :-)

Hmmm. I hope everything works out with the new one. I've only had one problem with my first Canon and got it replaced no problem (not Best Buy but an on-line store). I did not buy a warranty either but since it went bad the day I received it (5 photos and the shutter went kaput) I still had the sellers 30 day warranty.

Best Buy is famous for putting returned merchandise back on the floor. I tested this with a printer I bought from them years back. I put a little scuff on the bottom of the box in the shape of an 'A' and about a week later I walked down the aisle and flipped over 2 boxes of the printers like the one I returned and the 2nd one had the 'A' on the bottom of it. They couldn't have repaired it because the head was broken off it's track. ...bits of plastic laying on the bottom of the printer. And it made a horrible noise. It was an Epson. Don't remember the model number.

Anyway, I know Canon makes quality stuff. hopefully you got a new one for real and not a repackaged faulty one.

Great that they replaced the camera but to be honest I feel a little cheated when they replace an item with a new one and I then forfeit my extended warranty. I mean if I buy an item with 3 years of warranty I expect to not have to spend anything on that item for 3 years - not have it replaced and then have to spend more money to buy warranty for coverage of a period of time I have already paid for.

Would'nt he get a new warranty from Canon for the first year since it will have a new serial number? I would think so.....

In this instance yes - but other items I have had come with less warranty and the loss of extended warranty (you have paid for) still applies.

Yes you do even refurbs have to come with a limited warranty of some type. He would need to retain the exchange receipt and that the same as the original purchase receipt. Best Buy just closes the loophole that makes them responsible a second time. I think you can even buy another plan for the new camera and get around that. Technically they are giving you credit for the old to purchase the new since they get paid wholsale cost by the insurer.

The warranty was for the original item, when the item ceaseed to exist, so did the warranty. Pretty straight forward.

....the best camera is the one you have on you at the time.

my BB experience I found out there are two BB's . one is the local store and the other is BB.com . the store had there lenses on a two year no interest if paid in full within that time and don't be late with a payment . the lens 70-200 2.8 with I/S is only available on line . I didn't know they were two different operations . I ordered the lens from bb.com and when it arrived , I then called and found out I didn't qualify for intrest free .
I then returned the lens to my local store UNOPENED ..
the package I never opened . the sales girl @ BB opened and looked over the item and did a refund on my BB credit card . I then started to leave when she asked me where I was going ?? I told her home .. she then asked if I still wanted the lens ?? HELL yes I said but not without intrest free . I would rather use there $$$$ than mine . she said buy it from me NOW and you get interest free ... which I did ...
that was my second experience with BB . before I had a new sony f717 and the flash stopped working . they stripped my camera (mem. stick, strap, lens cap, battery) and gave nme a NEW camera . it wasn't a month old ..

Had a similar thing happen at Circuit City about 10 years ago. Returned a cordless phone after about a week because of issues. Had to wait about 10 minutes for them to send a new one out from the back on the conveyer belt. Got home, opened it up and mixed in with my "new" phone and the manual was our electric bill! My wife had just grabbed the manual off the coffee table when she was packing the original one up to return and it turned out she also grabbed the bill by mistake! Needless to say, the manager was mortified when we went back and we got a new phone for free:)

All the big box stores are like this Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, even the big Cell Carriers. If you buy in a Sprint store they charge activation which they will almost always wave anyway. But online they advertise no activation and give instant rebates instead of the MIR usually offered in stores. This can work in your favor since store managers now have to compete with the online side for raises and bonuses.

So anytime you spend more then $250 always ask the manager for a discount they will usually give 5-10% on most items depending on the markup. They gave me 10% off my fridge in Lowes + i had a 10% off Coupon from Ebay for $2 + no interest for a year which was pretty substantial. At the Auto Parts store they know the online side always has 15% off and they will usually do 10% (parts only) to try and keep the sale in store.

I bought two camera's from Best Buy. Got the no interest payment plan on each. Have not had a bad experience with them. My son bought a TV online for pickup in the store. When he went to Best Buy to pick it up the price was $200 more. The manager got involved and spent almost an hour talking to corporate HQ and otherwise trying to get the lower price my son had already paid online. In the end she explained that the online system and the store system were two different systems and the TV was no longer available in the stores at the price online. He paid the higher price and contacted Best Buy customer service the next business day and they promptly credited his account for the $200.
