Ugh. A removeable lens cap and not the built-in lens covering. Sure hope someone makes an aftermarket fix for this like they did for the Oly XZ-1.

no, but it will receive 1000x more negativity from the SLR crowd, they're all going cry bloody murder.

Haha, that's probably not an overstatement.

Question: How does one manually focus? I'd love to be able to manually focus by rotating something on the lens, like with DSLRs. Is that an option? Is manual override possible?

I would LOVE it if they would incorporate the ring functionality of the S95/100 into the newer G models! Unfortunately - no, they did not do that with the G1X. Looks like focus is still controlled through that somewhat clumsy wheel on the back. I wish they'd at least let the user program for the dial in the front to be used for focus. Maybe they did? Guess we'll see.

Cheers,
Robin Michael

Haha Thx for that clever suggestion, but I'd rather not have something dangling from the camera as I'm using it.

The lens is too big for a built in one to be feasible. Also, that's one of the #1 things to break on a compact. Wouldn't you be pissed if a damaged lens cap took down your $800 camera?

Here is the aftermarket fixed lens cap that was made for the Oly XZ-1. I just feel that a P&S should have a fixed lens cap. Less likely the chance to lose it, or the chance of the cap some how popping off while in a bag, etc. Though I guess at this price, most would store it correctly in its own case. Me personally, I just hate that I'd have another thing to have to keep up with.

ETA: Every P&S I've owned has been a Canon and I've never had the auto lens cap break or give me any problems.

Your first-look article says: "Conspicuously missing from the G1 X is a built-in flash." That's not true per this I-R first-look article;

I could not find that in the first-look article.

You think US $799 is pricey. Try £699 in UK (equiv. to US $1,082)!!!!

I actually think that Canon priced this camera perfectly.

I haven't had one break on a P&S, but have one now that won't close on my Canon camcorder (HF20) and one that works intermittently on my HV20 camcorder.

Not sure I'd rather do without the auto lens cap, but I can see how it would be tough to integrate one.

At least Canon has finally placed a center-style pinch cap on one of their lenses.
I wonder when they'll begin including these with all of their EF/EF-S lenses?

I don't think "getting it right" means just going with the flow. What would be gained by making yet another clone system? If you wanted interchangeable lenses, you'd likely have already bought one of the current systems. Canon decided to do something different. Time will tell us if it was smart.

when a fixed lens camera is bigger and weights more panasonic gx1 with interchangable pancake lens, yes, maybe next time they will get it right.

oh and cost about the same, if not more.

i want a canon mirrorless camera, if they make a new mount, i want EF adapter, while buying new smaller lenses, i could still use my current EF lenses.

I think this point and shoot cam is finally the one that users can actually use the manual/aperture/shutter priority functions due to the sensor size and big aperture.

Good point was made about using your Speedlight on the G3. I bought a 550EX for my EOS 3, then used it on my G3, and now on my 40D.

Complaints/concerns have been expressed about size of the body, is it much bigger than other G Series? Seems to look fine to me. One photographer says it is too small, to another it is too big...

I hope to get one of these some day.
