Looks like it could be a Cooper's Hawk - common where I am in Florida, and I think they have a fairly big range. Obviously you're not in FL - we don't get that horrible snow stuff. (I used to live much further north...) Where are you located?

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Cooper's hawks also have quite a variation in markings/coloring, depending on season, juvenile, etc, IIRC. Do a Google Image search, you can see what I mean...

EDIT2: I'm thinking a juvenile Cooper's Hawk, based on the yellow eye. But I don't have my bird books in front of me, just Google...

shinksma could be correct. At first I thought Red Tail Hawk though.

However, if you post that picture in the "1000 Best Raptor Photo" thread, I bet somebody will even tell us name and age of this bird. There are quite some experts there.

Here is the link: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1069862

Cheers.

Looks like a sharp shinned hawk, which is very similar to a Coopers. Tough to tell without seeing the tail, but I'm saying sharpie.

Just bought this lens new from BH. Haven't had much time to shoot considering I get home after dark every day. I had a little time with it this afternoon and wanted to test the sharpness wide open (f/5.6) at 400mm. Do you thinks think I got a decent copy?

yes. the first shot is not the best, however, the last shot, you can see the IQ.

Finally something I can share in this thread! I don't use this lens much, and when I do I don't get nearly as wonderful images as the ones posted here. But today was a pretty good day, I'm sure the monopod really helped. (Tripod would have helped more, but there's not enough room to set it up on my balcony!)

Hummingbird in the tree next to my balcony, about a 50% crop:

One more, not cropped quite as heavily:
